Hmm... Wet Wrapped Handles?

JT's "JT Wrap" video has me chomping at the bit. And because I'm sharpening away ever more of my Sebenza's blade I thought I'd make myself that perfect yard knife, and wrap the handle - just seems appropriate for a hard-working knife.

But it occurs to me that the knife is going to get wet, and I'm going to use O1. Water doesn't hurt S30V but it sure is gonna get to my new knife.

So any ideas whether it makes sense to treat the tang somehow before I wrap it? And if so, what with? Cold blue? Some other controlled patina? Gun Kote? Epoxy? Or should I just decide to maintain it as well as I can and live with the result?

Curious what you folks would do. Thanks for any ideas.

I've usually painted the tang area with some rustoleum black before doing my cord wrap and it works out great.. Be sure to let the paint dry completely before wrapping or it will come off and not give any protection to the tang.

I love kg gun kote, its tuff easy to apply and awesome, i usually do the whole thing, not just the tang. its kinda pricey though

Yup, mask and Gun Kote or you can CA where the wrap will be.

These are all good ideas. I have some Gun Kote, used only on one knife that I sent to someone else, so I've been wanting to test it for myself. I think that may be what I use on this one, just so I can test the stuff.

One benefit, I can always make other knives and test those methods too. :D

Thanks for the replies, gents.

take some pics when you're done! :)

I will Michael, but trust me - this is going to be an ugly little knife. It's a small, pocket sized fixed blade with a modified wharncliffe under a weird nosed point. Its only redeeming feature is likely to be the wrapped handle, and I'll probably hose that since it'll be my first one. ;)

Which brings up another point. I need to try to find some cord that's more in scale with the smaller handle than paracord would be. Not sure what that's going to be just yet. I think the cord should be about 2/3 the diameter of paracord. I might end up making a leather thong the right size but would rather use a synthetic if I can find one. Suggestions welcomed!

treat the tang with a metal conditioner and heat, prior to wrapping. Use MILITEC, heat up the tang with hair dryer and apply, let it soak in over night then wipe completely dry. It penetrates the metal much like linseed on wood, but on a more microscopic level.

then wrap with cord and use WEST epoxy and dip the cord wrap and tang. Let cure. Good to Go!

go to wally world and get a can of spray on truck bed liner,
several thin coats will work better than a single thick coat.
