Hmmm... That design looks familiar

What's the big deal? I thought Busse was supposed to be about performance, not looks. If someone makes an AC Cobra replicar with a VW bug engine, what harm does it do to the person lucky enough to own the real thing with the 427 Ford? Or Carroll Shelby, for that matter. It's not like they're competing in the same market.

It's trademark infringement and if Jerry doesn't enforce it when it rears it's head the trademark is worthless. It is as simple as that. You would want to prosecute someone who usurped your identity for their profit wouldn't you? It is a similar but not completely analogous event.

I didnt know you could trademark something as general as drilling a hole in a knife. Whats next, copyrighting clip points? or different edge grinds?

I do agree they should go after them on principle, but I highly doubt any of those knock offs would actually affecte Busse's bottom line. As John said it's a different market, I didnt buy a busse cause it looked pretty, I bought it cause its theyre among the best damn knives on the available.

This same discussion occurs every time one of these comes up. Jerry has a legal trademark on the front talon hole. Agree with the principle of it or not, it is a legal reality and it is his responsibility to enforce said trademark. There is no administrative agency that will step in for him. I can't understand what is so hard to grasp in regards to this that it has to be rehashed each time one of these knock offs come up. No one said it was going to effect Jerry's bottom line, there is no contest between the Hell Razor and this POS. The folks who buy those knives are not likely the same demographic Jerry's blades hit in the first place, again that is not the issue. He can't be every where to catch them all and it is this community that sort of helps him by catching these and bringing them to his attention. Neighbors watching out for one another's concerns so to speak.

I want to see KnifeTests drive a Hell Razor through it :D

That would not work very well, the Big Bad Bowie would just shatter. It would sure look cool if the material was soft enough to put the HR through it without it shattering, but I guarantee what ever stainless crap steel it was made out of would just turn into like 5 pieces on the first tap from the tip of hammer on the back of the HR.

(although that pin layout on the handle looks nice.......mmmh, maybe one of Ban's grinds on a HR, and put a natural canvas micarta handle on it with extra pins for dress?)

The problem with low quality rip offs is not with people who know better. Most of the Busse users and collectors will look at it and say that is a piece of crap rip off, Also, the mall ninja who buys one for mallninja use for $20 bucks, would not be buying the Busse anyway. But There might occasionally be some one new to Busse that is fooled and buys on and thinks it is crap (aka Busse must be selling junk), or the guy who buys a bunch and removes the logo, and tries to sell it as a custom shop busse......any way you look at it some one some where is going to buy one by mistake or see one fail in use and think it is a Busse. And Progunner is right, if you see infringement and let it go, it does not take too long to loose the protected status of any design.

I only wish Jerry had a design patent on the blade, that thing looks like it was "designed" by tracing an HR. And then the very first line on the United Cutlery homepage about all the competitors copying their designs. That's pretty shameless in my book.

With designs like these its understandable though why United Cutlery is worried about knock-offs:

If that plant in the above post's at the top of the page is in China then I'm Chinese!! Dang Ford PU right there in the picture!! Go to their front door Jerry and cut the damn thing off the hinges with the REAL Busse Knife. That'll let them know what's coming if they copy one more design from the Hogland! Plus, you give them the gift of a nice draft for the coming hot Summer, free of charge of course!

If that's the case you would think the legit knife dealers who order from clowns like United would give Jerry, and other knifemakers a head's up before some working Joe did, ya think?

You mean, all those dealers who Jerry DOESN'T do business with? Making a dollar is the bottom line for a lot of knife vendors. Loyalty to a company who defies retail sales...vs. a cheap blade for a mall ninja.

Everyone wants to make a buck, and principles be damned.

Go get'em Jerry!
