hobo esbit stove (fail?), and some time outdoors

I too did think your can might not have enough in the way of air holes... It is probably worth experimenting there too. Cans are cheap enough!
 
maybe you can burn the esbit outside of the can and get some kind of stand for the pot and try it... although i think you already did that????
