Hog Hunting Rifle

havent had a chance to hog hunt but i use a TC Venture in .300 win mag for deer and i love it. im sure its plenty to drop just about anything that moves.

I was looking at the Ruger Scout but have been leaning toward the Winchester SXAR. Any thoughts?

I have the FNAR which is the all black version of the same gun (FN owns Winchester now as I understand it) and I really like it a lot. Once you set up the cheek riser and butt pad to your liking, the thing just plain shoots and with very little recoil for a .308. With a large scope on it though, it can be a little heavy after carrying it all day.

i use a ruger 10/22,,22 lr revolver,or 22 mag bolt action when running the dogs,,on solo hunts i take my 30 cal carbine, ruger mini 14,or my 30-30 winchester,,when bow hunting i grab my ruger 357 revolver for back-up,,just depends what i want to carry.

I would love to go HOG Hunting. I would like to use my bow. I like that up close and personal feeling that you get. If I had to use a rifle it would have to be my 300 win mag. I like to be able to reach out and touch things.:D

within 300 yards i go with my weatherby vangaurd series 2. I have it in 30-06 but it comes in almost all the most common calibers. It is light and has a staged light trigger. They are new and cost less than the ruger scout. They also come with a 1inch group guarantee out of the box

Never had a chance to try hog hunting, but I have shot the Ruger Scout. Excellent gun. I believe it work great.

My go-to is the AR platform. I prefer 5.56, but the bigger rounds work well too. Why the AR? Light-weight, maneuverable, quick, dependable, accurate, and 30-rds of hell to unleash. that I can think of. I love it.

What bullets do you use and where do you shoot them with the 5.56? Thanks

I use black hills loaded with 62-grain TSX bullets. Cordon loads are great too...loaded with TSXs.

I always aim for the kill zone....no fancy shots for me. The TSX penetrates very well, and has always made ethical kills on hogs / deer for me.

I've shot em with the 62 grn green tip rounds and dropped them in their tracks (head shot), and I've shot them with 154 grn .308 (shoulder shot) and had them run 75 yards before dying. Pigs are tough.. no doubt.

Hogs are built differently than deer, coyotes or most things we are all used to hunting. Head shots are preferable...If broadside, shoot them in the ear. This will go to the brain. If facing you, shoot the forehead ABOVE, not between the eyes. They have large heads and the brain isn't as easy to locate as it is on other critters.

The following shows the heart, lung and brain:

But back to the OP... How does that Ruger group? I've had my eyes on one.

Talk to these folks about thier 7.62 x 40 they love to kill hogs with suppressed rifles in this round. If you are an AR guy all it takes is a barrel switch which any gunsmith or armorer can do. http://www.wilsoncombat.com/762x40WT.htm

I have been looking for a hog/back up deer gun and am thinking real hard about building at least an upper the above caliber. Since we can't hunt with a rifle here in Ohio it is hard to justify the $ though. I have been wanting a Remington 7600 pump rifle in .308 for years and think this year might be the time to get one.

Thanks for the link Messer, that is a sweet looking supressor. I have 2 AR's but have never hunted hog's with them although, I would feel comfortable doing so as I alway's go for head shot's anyway unless I am trying to line 2 up for the killshot. I did it the other evening with my 7 mag however, it was 100 yards and hit alittle high behind the shoulder. The 7 mag ballistic tip blew the back bone out and did penetrate the other side however, don't believe enough got through to kill the other pig although, it may have injured it. The onetime I did kill 2 with one shot with my rifle, it went through the neck of the first hog and into the spine of the other. If I can get the drop on a group at close range, the 12 gauge can kill multiples easily and have done it several times. If a surpressed rifle is quite enough, one could set there and pluck them off one by one. They are used to being hunted here and scatter quickly when a shot is fired. Even with a 12 gauge at close range, one must be extremely quick to get off multiple shot's as we don't have large open areas. It is shooting lanes and small food plot's. I wish the surpressor did not require the Class 3 stamp as that can run into serious money. I wish they were just standard equipment as it makes good sense to use one for several reason's. It's my understanding they were brought into Class 3 at the request of Game Warden's due to the potential for poacher's abusing them. The Hog problem is going to take special equipment along with trapping and snaring to get it under any kind of control especially when 75% of the population must be harvested each year to keep the population in check and that is simply not happening now, in my area atleast.

75% of the poputlation. Holy pig .

Let me load up the truck with ammo and lets get this party started. :D
