skinning a wild hog can be hard on your knife im looking for good steel that can hold an edge,an under $150 bucks.i was looking at grohmann in stainless an carbon, brkt with 12c27 sandvik, dozier d2 ,how are these, an what would you use
First choice would be my S90V millie, could probably skin 10 hog's without needing a resharpen. Other good choices would be a RC-3, brkt, blind horse knives or a mora.
howzit Kalama! i know exactly what youre talking about when skinning the local kine boars! Any lineup from Bark river is going to do very well the heat treat on their knives is one of the best. I like to use this one from BRkt: http://www.barkriverknifetool.com/skinning_caping/wolfriver/index.html it has served me well on the last couple of boars that i had to skin.
This is one I have and Richard says he can make more. http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id16.html
They are $150.
He has a special chisel convex grind that is durable but cuts really well.
I use a simple Buck skinner - holds an edge just fine and I have skinned MANY pigs with it. I can skin a 200 pounder and only have to touch the blade up once, maybe twice during the job.
