Normally I don't like to take orders but after Blade I was so beat the first few days back home I got no insperation on my own so I took an order for a spike hawk to be used in hog hunting. That got me going. I decided to give the customer a choice so thats what I did. He picked the bottom one which was the first one I made but I just couldn't stop with one.

I'd like a description of how he gets his hog with that.Typically those who hunt pigs with steel use a 8-12" blade with a strong point and thrust into the heart as the dogs hold the pig.

Mete, He's going to send me a tape of the kill. The spike was his main concern. Funny thing is I sold another hawk at Blade to a fellow that also said he was going to use it for hog hunting. I do my hog hunting at the butcher shop.

Those guys must aim for the head? Great looking spike hawks Ray. Save one out for me, and I'll send you some mesquite for the handle, it'll be a wall hanger, the only hogs I can catch are Hormel.

Now that I think of it I did do some hog hunting. I had bought my son a pot belly pig for a pet years ago. The only mistake I ever made. That darn pig would get out of his pen at least 3 or 4 times a week. The last day he was still kicking he had gotten out 4 times. That was it.....

Bruce, From talking to the fellow on the phone I think he's wanting to use the spike as a holding device and then making the kill with a knife. Dogs are used also.

They look good, I think from having to deal with piny wood rooters that I'd feel safer with a 45, you don't have to get so close!

Dang, cool stuff Ray!

I sure wish I could have stuck around Oregon and watched you forge a hawk.

I need to make me one of those!

Hope you post them when all finished up with handles! :)

Nick, I've been asked to do the forging demo again next year and most likly I'll do another hawk except one around the size of these. You do need a small anvil for hawks. :D Have you tried your new toy yet?

Those Hawks are really nice!!

I don't know about using a hawk for hog hunting, even as a holding device. If you have ever hunted hogs with dogs you will understand this as they are litterally all over the hog. Would hate to sink that spike into one of the dogs!! It is hard enough to control the knife and push dogs away from where you are planning on sticking with the other hand!!

Best way to immobilize a hog when doing this kind of hunting is to have another hunter or guide hold a back leg or the tail. This keeps the hog from spinning and throwing the dogs off.

'seasy, reach in with the spike, hook the hog in the n#tsack and pull him back
I knew Sweany would come through for us!LOL! I imagine that would freeze that hog in place! Nice hawks, fella! I would think the spike would be pretty lethal on a hog's brain pan, too.

John, Sweany has the right idea. I don't think a hog's brain is much bigger than a pea. A shot to the lower brain I'm sure will get its attention.......

cool hawks Ray. I had a feller buy one of my spike hawks a couple years ago to use for gator hunting, hogs or gators have a tendency to play for keeps, I think I'll just stay on the porch. ;) If one comes buy I'll throw a beer can at him, empty of course. :D
I just finished up a knife today that would make a great companion to that hog killing hawk Ray. The ol boy couldn't go wrong with a pig sticker too. ;)
I guess I better get back on the porch.

Nice job as always.

Bill

Ray's hawk and Bill's pig sticker & empty beer can and Bruce's side arm (mine'd be a .45 too) and we're off killin pigs! NOT! I'm way too old for that kind of fun, but Ray those hawks are everything I expected. My little mini goes everywhere I do. ;) Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see the finished product.

Haven't the hunters heard about this thing they have called smokeless powder? It's used in all caliber ammo. I don't think I want to go hog hunting with a hawk. A 30/338 Win Mag yes.

Hey Ray,Some great looking hawks there. When you mentioned that pot belly pig you had that kept getting out it reminded me of my neighbors "pet".They are my closest neighbors at about a mile away. This hog still gets out of his pen a couple times a week too.The wife came out the door one morning to see this thing and about had a stroke, lots of bears around here and thats the first thing that came to her mind when she saw this at 3 feet.It takes the neighbors about an hour or more to "Herd" this critter home with their truck every time he gets out.Like you,I would have turned him into bacon and hams a long, long time ago!
