Hogging; wheel or platen?

I didn't want to hijack the thread I was just reading but it seems the consensus was to hog on a 10" wheel versus a flat platen. I only have an 8" wheel and a steel (for now) platen. In the Beaumont demo videos he hogs on both the wheel (10" i think) and the flat plate. Should I try the wheel, and if so, why?

Profiling with a wheel is much less stressful to your motor and belts then using a platen. But when it comes to flat grinding a bevel you have to go to the platen.
 
I don't see that it makes a difference which diameter wheel you profile on, as long as it's of reasonable size.
I'd think hogging on a platen would be rough on the belt and produce more chatter inside curves.

If you try both back to back, you will always choose the wheel, at least for areas that can be reasonably reached with a wheel.
 
I run a serrated wheel for serious hogging and profiling to start with. They run cooler and let the belts last longer. I'll actually make a series of hollow grinds across the blade. The deepest one along the cutting edge before I flat grind on the platen. This helps when you goto the platen at the start you'll have less area of resistance because your removing the high spots instead of trying to cut the full width of the blade.

I was literally just going to ask whether this was a viable strategy for a flat grind. I assume that belts last longer and run cooler on the wheel because there's a lower surface area in contact with the belt at any given time, and therefore a higher transference of the power of the motor into removing metal from that self-same smaller surface area, thus making the hogging more efficient? That's the explanation that seems to make the most sense for me, although why it would be easier to profile on the wheel vs the platen I guess I'm not sure, because the surface area in contact with the belt shouldn't be substantially different. Hmmm...

It's my understanding that with a wheel you don't get any friction from pressing the belt against the platen. Keeps things cooler and is supposed to help belt life.
 
Interesting. I may have to build a tool rest for the wheel on my coote so I can profile blades on it.

That's right. With a wheel, you only have friction on one side of the belt. With a platen you're dragging against the blade and against the platen.
 
Wheel hoggin' is where it's at!

It makes sense from a physics standpoint.(friction, point of contact, temperature, etc...)

Good thought, that makes a lot of sense. Pretty sure I can grind on the wheel with my craftsman 2x42. Will have to investigate that.
