Hogue Deka lock bar material

At the time I ordered the Deka, a little over $100 for a Magnacut folder seemed like a good deal. Now I'm having regrets. The edge bevel is 24 degrees on one side and 27 on the other. Ripping off and replacing thumbstuds to put a decent edge on a knife is ridiculous.

Have you tried contacting Hogue? If not, I'd suggest explaining the situation to them, and ask them to reprofile it.

I own three Hogues and they have all arrived with excellent and extremely sharp edges.

I recently purchased a magnacut Deka Wharncliff and immediately replaced the scales with GOAT'S. There is a thread here warning people about scale swaps on Dekas- I didn't really have any problems. It took me about 15 minutes and now I could probably do it in 5.

Blade arrived very sharp, perfectly centered, and the bevels are even.

I'd recommend you contact Hoque and see if they'll fix or replace yours.

ETA: the lock-bar is steel.

One reason I would not do that is that I do not know exactly what angles will be best. I would probably reduce the angles to 22 degrees, try the knife for a while, see if it would cut cardboard. If not, then take it down to 20 DPS, try it again, maybe go down to 18 DPS or 15 DPS depending on how it works.

Another reason is that I generally don't trust major knife companies to get the bevel right. I've seen too many bad ones.

the same goes for buying such knife and then you can't put a decent edge on it because of ridiculous thumbstud.
I don't know....then live with the edge as it is.
If I can get the thumbstuds off, I might just leave them off. The Deka opens OK when I pull the lock bar and give it a wrist flick.

I sent a Deka back due to a wonky, uneven grind and it came back little different. I was able to re-profile it to 17.5 degrees on my TSPROF without removing the thumb studs, though I do have extended mini-clamps.

Why would you desire a titanium lock bar? On a volumetric basis (same dimensions) steel is stronger than titanium.
He didnt say he "desired" titanium. He clearly saod he hoped steel NOT ti, as benchmade used (steel is what the deka uses)

My deka was one of the worst knives ive ever bought out of box. Thankfully, after much tinkering, it's usable.

If you are pretty handy with your hands then it is not impossible. I mean only after mods is this knife great. Theres a good chance that the pivot screw will almost strip when trying to get through it's blue Loctite. So I just used a mini torch and that helped. Of course that side of the scales just melted too 😂. The red Loctite is another monster. I used the mini torch again and strength to get one side off but because the other is stuck so hard inside there, you really have to work it out with some pliers. They will definitely be scratched to hell so you will need some replacement thumb studs, such as BM ones, they fit.

Asking the company to remove their own thumb studs would be hilarious if they agreed to that.

I'm sure you guys will be fine. Just maybe tape the edge of the blade up first so you don't slice yourself!

What did you have to do to it?
Had to soften the thumbstud edges (literally cut myself on em the first day), took it apart and cleaned the grit and relubed, switching the clip over to the show side (im left handed) the brand new, never been in my pocket snapped off. Contacted hogue, they sent me the wrong one. They then sent me the right one after a discussion with a higher up where i explained i shouldnt have to pay shipping to send me yet another clip, when they sent me the wrong one to start, to replace the one that broke just inserting a screw in it. After all that, its a good knife, but ill be replacing the scales asap as they suck. It cuts like a laser though! Love magnacut!

This horse may just need to lie, but, this may help someone. I have both Hogue Deka V1 and V2 and they have different thumb studs.

V2 with Magnacut takes the common T6, and is not an issue getting a good purchase to remove it. Can't remember if it had threadlocker.

V1 with 20cv takes a weird 3 prong tool that took me a while to find. Once I had it, I got the female threaded side off no problem. Yes, it did have some thread locker, not sure the color but a little heat breaks it loose. The male side had a slight interference fit to the blade and it took threading the female side in a little, and giving it a bit of a whack while protecting the thumb stud threads.

Here is my V1, the V2 is at work.

If someone puts something together, it will come apart.

Hmm, I have a V2 MagnaCut and there's no torx head on the thumb studs.

Well that's odd.

I'll take a picture of my V2 tomorrow and then we can see the difference.

Your thumb stud will come out.

Great, would like to see yours.

Hoping I won't need to remove it; as mentioned earlier in the thread, I was able to sharpen it on my TSProf without the thumb studs interfering.
