When I first found out that Hogue was going to enter the folding knife industry with button lock knives designed by Allen Elishewitz, I was immediately intrigued. I just got my EX01 2 days ago, and my first impressions are very positive. :D

The frame is anodized aluminum, I got the black but it also comes in green. There is also black and green g-mascus (g-10 that looks like damascus) with steel liners available and a tanto blade if you'd prefer it over the drop point. I got the 3.5" version and 4" versions should be available in about a month.

The action is very smooth and it has an added safety that can be engaged easily with the right thumb. In videos on Allen's blog he shows how beefy the pivot is. The pivot, button and safety all match with a stair-stepping texture that looks great and is functional. The button lock snaps into place with an authoratative "clack." It also acts as the detent to keep the knife closed--a nice design feature that can be seen in the third picture. The pocket clip is right hand only and it can be flipped for tip-up carry too. The swedge on the blade has the Hogue name and logo on the left side and Elishewitz/logo on the right side which is much better than having writing all over the blade. The blade steel is 154cm, it came razor sharp and has double lugs for one handed opening.

The MSRP is $179.99 for my version, which seems to be in-line with it's quality and its street price will keep it in competition with what's out there. Holding the EX01 in hand, it fits very well, it's on the small side and can easily be braced against the heel of the hand. The 4" version is scaled up on every axis, it's just not longer. I am looking forward to getting a 4" g-mascus version with a tanto blade.

In the last picture it's next to a Paramilitary. The EX01 is about a 1/4" longer.

I picked up one from Allen at Blade and I have to say that I am in love with this knife. From the second you cycle it open and closed it just screams quality. And the smoothness of this knife is unrivaled IMO.

Did you get one of his handground blades? I would have loved to score one of those.

I just might have to scarf one of these. Blade HQ has them in stock, drop point could be in the works for me. keepem sharp and thanks

It is a nice looking knife and I was able to handle one at Blade, but I wasn't real impressed with the button lock. I guess it is similar to other button locks but it just didn't seem that strong to me. I'm sure it is more than enough but something about the knife overall didn't blow me away although I don't really know why. I guess some of the parts in the disassembled knife they had almost seemed like parts out of a toy. Maybe it was the way they were finished?

Let us know how they hold up and work once you have had a chance to use it for a while because it is a nice looking knife.

None. Zero blade play on its beefy pivot. A hardened button lock has plenty of strength for a folder and a mechanical advatage over a liner or even a frame lock. I don't know that it is as strong as an axis or ball bearing lock but it is similar to a compression lock.

I'm glad you like it and like I said I'm sure it is probably fine. I am basing what I said on playing with the knife and looking over everything for 10 minutes at a show. And like I said I'm not even positive what gave me that feeling and it is probably fine. Not everyone is going to like everything so it's not a big deal. I do like the size and profile of it.

And I didn't say weak, I said not as strong. A button lock is not going to be as robust as some of the other lock designs out there IMO.

i was actually reading Allens biography last night, the guy is very accomplished. I was also surprised to see how young he looks in the videos. i really like his work, he has made some awesome designs. i would love to get my hands on one of these, luckily pay day is tomorrow ;)

I grabbed one at the Blade Show as well ...same as the one reviewed. What an Awesome Design !!! I can't say enough about this design, except for those that have an opportunity to handle one ...PLEASE DO SO!!! You won't be disappointed. I've been EDCing it while On-Duty and it's impressive in the field !!!

Forget the new ZT 0550, I want one of these!
I already have an Sng and an XM-18 anyway. Why buy the stepchild spawn?

This looks like a really well made button lock.
The overall design looks great.

Nice to see a quality manufacturer like Hogue get into the game. Some of the other makers seem to be resting on their laurels. This knife may raise the bar.
