Hogue EX01 Green G-Mascus 3.5" Drop Point

I believe it's in the 5.6 to 5.8 area.

I'm pretty sure that's correct & the G-10 versions are about .2 oz lighter than the aluminum version.

As to why the G-10 version doesn't have full SS liners, I think it's for 2 reasons.

1. It would probably add a bit more weight & might make it heavier than the aluminum model.

2. The G-10's pretty thick & does not flex.

I honestly don't know which one's stronger. While the aluminum one should be stronger, I don't know if the aluminum could develop play where the metal parts fit into it. On the G-10 versions, the SS inner bolster provides (I think) a stronger fit for the lock/pivot components & could quite possibly be the stronger of the 2 versions.

The bottom line is, I honestly think they're both very strong & I don't see the G-10 version being the weaker of the 2.

Without handling the aluminum knives from Hogue I tend to agree with you 100%. I don't have any concerns with this G10 knife's strength at this point.

The designer had this to say about wear issues of some of the parts.....

"The EX01 is not the first high quality folder to only utilizing the anodizing surface as a washer. Almost every manufacturer out there has a knife similar to this construction.
You are correct type 3 anodizing is very tough; it is so tough I have actually sparked it on the grinder. The bearing surface of the aluminum washer is about .800; that's a big surface in contact with the blade. What will happen over time is the anodizing will get burnished. The blade and handles have been tumbled giving them a smooth surface. I don't believe you will wear out the anodizing. There are autos that have the same type of construction and I have never seen the type 3 anodizing wear. The knives I have seen had a sand blasted finish and not a smooth finish.
If the aluminum washer was kind of small like 1/2" or so, then I might be worried but spreading the wear and the contact over a bigger surface, the washer would be the least of my concerns."

"There is not going to be any weird wear issues; the stainless bolster plates have been machined flat and tumbled and will burnish over time. You got to remember the washer size is huge which is distributing a lot of the force and the wear"

i received mine today, definitely one of the best knives i have received in a long time. everything about it is superb. the quality is just so high and the design is so well executed. i got the black aluminum 3.5 drop point. its the perfect size. now i just need to get a few more of these.

Totally. I bought my second one the day after I received my first. I may actually have to force myself to get a tanto as well.

Reeek, thanks for the nice review and excellent photos.

I've had one of these on order for a month now... it'll show eventually. Looks like a cost-effective hard use folder.

Does anyone know if Hogue is actually making these themselves? I suspect they must be farming it out somewhere... but the fit and finish is the final arbiter.

They are - the box says made in the USA at the Hogue plant is Paso Robles, CA. ;) That makes this knife a top value even more. I love them personally.

My 3.5" green g-mascus drop point should be here tomorrow. Can't wait; I've been drooling over the pictures for the last couple of days.

Wow! What a nice knife. Just got mine today and am very impressed. Green gmascuse with 3.5" drop point blade. It makes one awesome "snap" when it locks in place. I quickly changed the clip to my preferred method of tip up carry. Absolutely no blade movement at all when it's locked. Love the blade shape and finish. My only critiques is it does seem to be a little more blade heavy when open than what I'm used to. Also, the G-10 seems a little "sharp" along the fingers when it's open. Minor gripes I know. Overall, one awesome knife! Maybe I need to get a 4" and/or the aluminum version now. :)

These look absolutely outstanding...I'm torn between the 3.5" drop point in aluminum, an al Mar sere 2k, or a lone wolf longhorn. Two questions though: what is the warranty like, and how thick is the handle on the 3.5" one? I'd like to occasionally edc it, but I'm really turned off by thick handles.

Wow! What an awesome knife! I will have to get one as soon as I can to go with the grips on my .45.:D

is it drilled for tip up? love the looks but I just dont like tip down.
thanks!
yes , but only on one side .

Right-hand use, drilled for tip-up or tip-down clip orientation.

I smooth and polish the edges of clips, when possible, because it looks better and feels as if it goes into my pocket easier. I do that on my other knives, too. 600-grit wet-or-dry paper, followed by Flitz polish.

The blade action gets smoother with use. Much smoother! I use FirePower FP-10 or WeaponShield lube, which also helps.

I also replaced the 3 hex-recess slab screws with Torx screws (2-56, 5/16", T7).
