Should i get the G-mascus or play it safe with aluminum?

Also, the tanto 4" looks sick to me but would be my first tanto.... any thoughts on that?

thanks!

From what I heard, people thought the handles on the 3.5" were a bit small. But I guess that depends on your preferences. 4 inches might be a bit much for some.

i think for edc it will be ok... i don't want to lug around a 5.8 oz knife...

this picture just sold me on the tanto...

The 3.5" handle is a bit small plus it is much more blade heavy than the 4". The 4" is one of my all time favorite folders for the handle, blade and overall quality. These things are scary nice. The two I have (I traded my 3.5" though, Green G-Mascus) are custom quality knives in every respect. Just perfect.

The 4" rules though.

not too heavy for edc?

I've got the Aluminum 4" tanto, and I decided this after handling the Gmascus and the drop point blade.

I strayed away from tanto style blades a little while ago, but there was just something about the Hogue tanto that spoke to me.

I could not warm up to the Gmascus. It was nice and grippy - but aesthetically not my cup of tea.

Very nice knife, well built and finished. Argueably one of the sharpest out of the box I've ever owned - the edge was polished on mine. Scary sharp.

I've handled quite a few of these models already, and both the aluminium and G-Mascus versions are extremely well made knives.
The build quality of the aluminium versions reminds me of old school Microtech knives; no bladeplay, centered blades, an overall feel of quality.
I would highly recommend these knives to anyone looking for a quality tactical folder that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

The G-Mascus versions are made just as a well, but they offer a bit more grip and don't feel cold to the touch.
Weight difference is negligible as that's only 10 grams on my digital scale.
Each and every knife i've handled had a polished edge and was at least shaving sharp right out of the box, some could even treetop hairs.
Because the pivot pin is placed more towards the front end of the handle the EX01 knives offer more blade length than comparable knives.

Below are some pics of the 4 inch G-Mascus version, with the last one in hand.

You've already made your decision so forgive the lateness of my reply. I have the 3.5" G10 (can't bring myself to say "g-mascus") drop point version, which is the opposite of what you're getting, but I did want to reinforce the point that the balance at least on this version is really off. Almost everything else about the knife is sweet, but the handle being so light means this model never feels properly anchored in my hand -- though fortunately that's compensated by the traction and grippiness of the highly textured handle material. This balance issue probably applies the least to your incoming 4" aluminum model though so if you read this take it with a big grain of salt.

kwackster's "in hand" pic of the 4 incher seems to confirm that they have kinda short handles or at least it appears short - kida like a Benchmade 710. All blade and just enough handle to grip it with none left over.

I want the 4 inch model myself. Has anyone spoken to the balance issue of a 4" aluminum handled model?

I had a 3.5" Tanto with the Gmascus scales and I really was not impressed with the handle either. It had a cheap feel to it for some reason. The blade was awesome though, very sharp, well made in every respect. The nested bolsters was something else I really did not care for. Full liners would be a much better alternative to provide a more balanced feel overall. If full liners ever do appear in the knife, I would definitely be more inclined to buy one.

The 4" G-Mascus doesn't have that feeling that the knife will jump out of your hand when opening it like the 3'5". I REALLY like the 4" DP, even in G-Mascus.

However, the general consensus is the aluminum handled knives are a tad better balanced even more.

Regardedless, I highly recommend sticking with the 4" in either handle material.

They are scary nice knives, not just for the money.

Thanks for the info Reek they're looking pretty nice to me in the 4" aluminum. Worth a look. :)
