Just wondering yall's thoughts on thier cpm 154 is, they say the rc is at 57-59, seems kinda on the soft side to me.
Although that X5 is seriously awesome and the 4" wharncliff is calling to me in my sleep

Huh...just saw somewhere else it was 54-56rc. That seems REALLY low to me

To my knowledge Hogue uses 154CM, not CPM-154 (virtually the same steel, but CPM steels have extra refinement processes). Most companies run 154CM around 60rc but Hogue and a few others run it a little softer to up the toughness. The lowest I would accept it at is 57rc because any lower and you lose a lot of edge retention. If it is ran at under 57 I would say run, because you don't thrash a folder like you would a fixed blade, so that toughness just means more sharpening.

Hogue is using cpm154 on thier new x5 folder

This is the first I have heard of the knife. I looked it up, and I am now really excited. Ambidextrous clip drilling? CPM-154 blade? Flipper button lock? Yes please!

The steel choice is my only disappointment w/ X5. At the advertised price point I was hoping for an upgrade to S30V or better.

Give me CPM 154 over S30V any day of the week.

If Hogue did a standard heat treat they heat treated for corrosion resistance as the most important factor with toughness and wear resistance being sacrificed slightly. For a production company that is understandable. Most of their clients are probably not knife nuts and most people in my experience value corrosion resistance above all.

Southern Grind made one of the best steel choices I have seen to address the above going with 14C28N and did a great heat treat and they got flack for it on the forums. Next to 14C28N going with CPM154 is not a bad choice.

As far as I knew, cpm 154 will out do s30v if done right with the heat treated.

I can't help but to get the sense that while hogue does build a very very nice knife they just have a hard time gaining ground with the diehards of other knife makers like Benchmade and ZT and Kershaw but there is nothing I repeat nothing wrong with their knives or design. I have owned an ex 04 and it was extremely nice
