I am teetering on the edge here.

Sit Rep:
Mrs. Gravel is having our second child in a few months.

The family is getting too large for current apartment and we need space...space cost.

I recently got a promotion at work so my pay increased and hours did also...which is really strange because during school...I am of the mindset of doing JUST enough to not get fired.

The wife put in an offer for a house and it was accepted.

Dilemma:

What do I do about the knife world?! I have this overwhelming feeling that I will soon be destitute and selling all my blades to stay afloat.

The ASH-1 HOG Edition is calling me...but I have to drop a few duckies to get it....and I NEED a knife that's etched "GravelPork."

I know I just need to take each day at a time and not panic.....but should I go ahead and streamline the collection? Leave it be until such time arises that I need to "streamline" it. We are fine....but I am getting that butterfly feeling every time I think about it!

This is our first house....a major Milestone (I think) and our second child.

Should I cease all knife buying until things settle and I see where we stand ...and miss out on the ASH-1 in all forms and all the Holiday deals in the exchange?

Solution:
WWYD!? (What Would Ya'll Do):D

This coupled with Finals this week has left me a bit distant and feel like my head is about to explode. I have been going through probably 3 cigars a day! Trying to steer clear of the alcohol until the 7th....last final.

what you should do is answer your pm's:rolleyes:

oh, premature congrats on the second child.

you need infi for your new son... maybe... you can keep your son and your infi... get your wife a second job?

.

Who is going to hire a 6 month pregnant lady! Her first job is soon to end.....like tomorrow!!

I know how you feel. I am in a similar boat myself right now. But I have found a way around it I think.

I think you should make a list of your blades ordered by how strong your death grip is on them.

If you have to start selling, start to recent releases that you should be able to replace a little easier than any of your hard to get blades. You will have to sell more but at least you can find them again!

Some blades you have would not be worth selling regardless of value since you would have a brutal uphill battle to find them again!

Hopefully though between the increase in hours and pay raise you won't have to sell any unless you decide to flip them for other blades!

If you figure out your new expenses vs your current ones hopefully the number won't be as scary as your imagination makes them out to be!

And best of luck/congratulations on the new place and the new addition Jason!

DON"T SELL YOUR KNIVES!!!!!!!!!!!

You will regret it and sub-consciously hold it against your new baby and your home. Everytime something goes wrong with the house it will be amplified by the thought that "I sold my INFI for THIS!!!!".

Sell something else, trim the fat elsewhere. I cut down about a hundred bucks a month on my cable/internet bill alone. And I don't even notice a difference. Also, consider just using Cell phones, why have two+ cell phones and a land line? Waste of money.

It's looking lean for me as well on the ASH, but they will be a round for a while and if it's meant to happen , it will. I will never sell my INFI again, unless I need money for health care.

I agree. Don't sell your knives unless absolutely necessary...and then only to someone you can trust to give you first shot at getting them back. Good luck with the birth of your baby.

Congrats,
Score the house and worry about INFI later!
Make sure there is a large stump out back!!

Indeed that is a tough choice. But will selling a piece or two help you cope with the situation? Make you less stressed out? Maybe wait till finals are over and see how you feel then... And wait till your Credit Card gets dinged. Separate a few pieces out from your collection you think you could part with, have your wife hide them... and see how that goes. If you have the money when they ship, no worries. If not the the credit card will give you a little cushion and time to sell to come up with the money.

I went through a simmilar thing when ordering my Ash's, thinking, I have car payments and I need more in savings, etc etc I must be crazy spending 1000 on knives! With ten already next to me... and christmas around the corner! But I figured I could always sell if it came to that. And maybe it will ship in 4 months. I promised I wouldnt buy ANY KNIVES until I got the ASH's And i started thinking about what I dont use/need/like. Right now I'm leaning towards letting a BATAC CG and Swamp Warden go, because I'm not huge on coatings...

GOODLUCK!

Keep your spending in check and don't live beyond your means! If money is an issue, put together a budget and MOST IMPORTANTLY.....FOLLOW IT!

I'm new to knife collecting, but I have a massive collection of video games, a lot of which are very rare and worth a few hundred dollars apiece. Sometimes I think about selling the collection but I know if I did, I'd immediately regret it.

Just be responsible with your cash, don't live beyond your means, budget yourself and things should be just fine!

Jason,

Well when I was in a pinch early this year I unloaded (think Black/Black BA-III, MOASH...:grumpy:), and for me it was the right thing to do at the time as I wasn't sure when I'd get back to work and I didn't want to be worried about money as well as health issues. Of course now I have a load of cash:rolleyes: but what I did at the time was right for me as I didn't want to find out in two months that I was in trouble and have to do a panic sale.

You'll have to figure out what is right for you.

Just a dumb question.... have you done a formal budget and see what that looks like?

What ever you do keep me on top of the list for your TAN/TAN blades.

Hold off on selling anything until the real need arises. Things most times have a way of working themselves out.

Hope all is well, Jason

Dude, don't sell yet --- 2 reasons,
1- the market stinks now (unless you have a buyer for the really sweet blades) and
2- you don't NEED to sell yet.

You've got some major stuff that you could move quickly, IF and WHEN you needed to.

The only reason I woud liquidate anything now is so that you can order the ASH1's -- but only IF you like them more than what you are selling... You could sell one of your sweeties (knives i mean!) and have enough for the 3 ASH1's.

Otherwise, hold on tight and enjoy the new adventures. I was in your shoes a few years ago, and it just gets better from here

Sell what you need to, when you need to do it. I'm in much of the same situation now - still living two states away from my family with a house that hasn't sold in 7 months.

You'll know the right thing to do, when you need to do it. About that, I have no doubt.

You're a good man, Jason. A filthy hog, but a good man.

Do the formal budget Tony G suggests and look it over with the wife.

Only after you've looked at that together should you think about anything as drastic as selling knives when the market is down.

Of course, you know we're all pulling for ya'!! :D

Speaking as someone who has overindulged in Busse, they are just knives! You have to take care of your family. Your standing in the community here is not dependant on the cool stuff you may own. So you may have to curtail your collecting, or slowly unwind your position. OTOH, as xaman pointed out, this seems to be a lousy time to sell stuff, unless it's really special. The average stuff is just not moving, unless you have a fire sale.

On the gripping hand, I bought two Blue Scrofas I really don't need, so maybe I should take my own advice. :o

If you do have to part with anything, sell the dogs 'n rats first. Only sell the INFI as a last resort.
