Got woken up at 5am in the dark this morning with bright red and blue flashing lights right outside my bedroom window. I'm on a 25 acre rural block (in Australia) so this was unusual....
It was the firies (rural fire brigade). My first thought was, My house is on fire! Went out to see what's up and they said there's a fire in the bush out the back of my place but they don't know exactly where or how to get to it. I threw on some clothes and shoes and jumped in my ute, and took them down to my neighbor's gate. Big winds had come up during the night, and a hazard reduction burn had gotten out of control and was spreading.
My neighbor got there and drove them in. I waited at the gate for the next crew and drove them in. We were still in the dark, four wheel driving across paddocks and through the bush. It looked surreal with the smoke and trees all lit up by red and blue flashing lights.
This is what it looked like after they put it out.
It was much scarier looking before that, pretty big flames being fanned by 50 to 80 kilometre per hour winds. I forgot to take photos then, I was running around. Big branches and the tops of tree trunks were falling down and crashing on the ground.
Spent the whole morning in the smoke. My neighbor was on his dozer pushing burning trees over. Three fire trucks were there, emptying and then refilling their tanks from the dam. I've been sneezing and coughing ever since.
There are two out of control wildfires burning on the coast nearby, much bigger than this one, and threatening local towns. So the fire crews had to hoof it down there to help out as soon as they'd finished putting this one out.
It's still winter here in Australia! It was freezing cold (we were in jackets and beanies) and it was still burning. Fire season has come early. The fire captain said he thinks it will be a bad Summer.
