Holding A Consistent Angle

Thanks Smitty, That would be great if you could make a 15 and 20deg wedge. Both my stones (water and diamond) are 3inches wide. I appreciate it. My email is Cbackies@hotmail.com

Oops, just checked me stock and I don't have any 3''. I'll see if I can get ahold of some at work tomorrow though.

If keeping your angle is hard, use your legs to move your body while your hands and holding the knife and you'll be able to keep your edge flat. Place your stone on a bench and let your legs move your whole body forward and back. When your arms move the blade, it's much harder to keep it flat on the stone as the angle changes as your arms move. using your legs, your arms are not moving, just holding the knife.

I wanted something similar but adjustable, so made this to use with an inclinometer :D

Put an old door hinge on one end and a rubber door wedge to make the angles.

I can use it with coarse diamond block

all at whatever angle I want or is required using the marker trick. All I have to do is hold the blade level, like soup in a spoon as nozh2002 puts it! Hope that helps.

I've got a 10" piece of 4x4 cut at 15 degrees that I've been using with some non-slip foam underneath. It works great, but the problem is that when I'm using my GS 1K and 4K stones with water, the wedge gets wet, and the wood is starting to split. I'm thinking I might do up something in plastic, but I like the thought of an adjustable angle. Do you have a repeatable way to recreate specific angles, or are you just moving the door jamb in or out to approximate the angle you want?

I intend to use an inclinometer to set the angles. I may mark the base with the positions to roughly repeat the most common angles like 15 and 20 degrees.

I want to be able to use full size stones and diamond stones to reprofile to 15 degrees and so match the angles on my Sharpmaker. Use the Sharpmaker for touch ups and the jig for repair of damaged edges or setting the profile on initial sharpening of new knives.

If I need a lower angle for a chisel ground Japanese kitchen knife I can find it using the marker trick, measure it to know in future what it is, then sharpen and strop using the jig to maintain consistent angle. It saves on having four or five wedges of differing angles :D

Small update, my PC died on me but after fitting a new MoBo and reformatting the thing Twice, we are back in business!

The Inclinometer arrived and works as advertised, nice touch is it's got a magnetic base plate so latches on to whatever my cheapy diamond plate is made of.

So the basic setup is like this, using whatever sharpening medium your into.

So basically I need to train myself to hold one angle, horizontal, and set the sharpening medium to the desired bevel angle. I've been playing with convex grinds on a mousemat the last couple of weeks. Getting good results from both methods really. The only problem so far is that a mineral oil impregnated coarse stone soaked into my strop, she doesn't polish like it should anymore even though the polishing crayon applies so nicely now  I've heard of guys spraying their strop with WD40, looks like I'll be making a new paddle strop out of some inch lath I've got put away.

Find the desired angle, then rest your index finger along the spine as a place holder. Remember this position. Now sharpen the knife. Eventually after a dozen knives or so the wrist will also remember the angle and the index finger will no longer be needed and can be shifted to the handle. It can always be put back on the spine as a place holder if the wrist forgets the angle.

Just realized that in the background there are diapers, a stroller thingy and possibly a tricycle. Which are all pink too, lol. Sorry...
