Hole in a nail nick?

This is a pic of the nail nick on my GEC made Northwoods presidential. You can see it has a hole in it now. Should I worry about strength or anything down the road? I am kind of attached to it and it has just seen regular carry and use, nothing different then my other knives.

I've always wondered how much metal is behind some of the deep cut nail nicks that I've seen. I've never seen or heard of this before but I've often wondered why not. This is something that I personally would not be able to live with. I would have to get it fixed regardless of what caused it.

It adds character Jeff. Keep using her as is imo. I wish I was able to use mine enough to wearout a hole. :D:thumbup:

Interesting to see though I must say. Thanks for posting.

Such is the impermanent nature of material things. I'd just keep using it, especially since you're not treating it as a collector's item. There's plenty of material around that tiny hole, so it's not like you'll try to open the knife one day and have the blade spine above the nick pull away. I think it just adds character. That said, if it bugs you, send it to GEC. I'm sure they'd take care of it.

That's neat to see. I've also wondered if that happens sometimes. It must have been so thin that it eventually chipped off.

I'd probably send it for repair but it has little functional significance and I doubt it weakens any part other than the nail nick. The only fix would be to replace the blade. And then you'd lose the micro Spydie hole. :p

Looks like opportunity to me. Maybe go ahead & open it up, aka Scagel style?!?

Exactly what I thought when I heard 'hole in a nail nick'...

How would that even happen? Repeated abrasive cutting against the backside of the blade which thinned down the remaining material? Very interesting though.

Use it to carry at church after all it is a "holy" knife. Sorry couldn't help myself. I believe I would keep carrying it I really don't think future problems would be a concern and if something more did happen you can always have the blade replaced and it sure does make it a great conversation piece. Thanks for posting the photo very interesting Kinda like that big ole hole in Willy Nelson's guitar.

I'm guessing the nail nick was cut just a hair too deep, plus maybe a bit of rust caused pitting at the thin spot. I can't imagine that your thumbnail could cause any wear.

I think it's kind of neat, and I doubt the hole will get any bigger as long as there's no active rust now.

I wouldn't worry about strength. There is still a lot of steel attaching the top of that nick to the rest of the knife. I'd make sure that when oiling the knife, you make sure you put some oil in the nail nick so you don't get any red rust going.

It kind of took my by surprise at first. Not sure how it happened. All my knives ride in the right pocket with my keys that bang against them. They all get used but not abused. I have no idea how it happened, no rust around it. I am going to just keep using it and just keep an eye on it. It is certainly uniquely mine now :) I will update if it enlarges and if I can ever get my camera to focus on the back side I shall post a pic. The deep nail nick on this one was also made more thin by the swede on the back.

I agree with Brett. Hope all is well with you Jeff. Call me or shoot me a text sometime.

Quit opening the dang thing with your teeth.

I've seen that a couple/three times on other knives with no issues down the road. If you like it use it. Besides, it's an oddity and worth keeping just for the conversation it'll bring about.

You must have killer thumb nails!!! ........ haha.

Personally it would bug me. Especially at the price of the knife....even though its a user. But that's just me. I totally get both sides of the coin, and own knives damaged far worse that I would never have repaired due to sentimental value.

Good luck in what you choose. Either way........please keep posting pics of the knife. There are only a few of you guys with the presidential, and I always love seeing them. Availability of spare funds is the only reason I haven't picked one up yet. One of these days.... ones of these days.

How about a pic from the other side of the blade. I would think that I would be more concerned about a hole in the blade on the side that is supposed to be smooth.
