Hole in a nail nick?

I decided to check out my presidential for the heck of it.
Well, what do you know...

Mine also has a hole. I tried to capture it on the other side, but without the light you would never see it. I'm just gonna keep on using mine. It doesn't worry me the slightest.
I guess that particular nic with that swedge and blade stock just don't get along.

I lied. I found a good angle where it is quite visible.
It is the small distinct line in the middle of the swedge towards the top of the blade.

It's funny how I've never noticed it when it is quite obvious in the picture above.

I am going to keep on using mine as well. I can catch my nail on the backside but with the patina it is undetectable really unless you get it in just the right light. If I can ever get a pic of it I will post it.

Erik, your hole is bigger then the one on my blade. I just have a crappy cell camera that won't focus properly but I'll keep trying.

Interesting, I have wondered before about if that could happen! The hole looks very different on the smooth side of the blade, more like a crack.

I have an equal-end, two blade harness jack, made prior to 1916, that has a perforated nail pull on the master spear.

I have no real idea how nail pulls were created in the early 1900's, but I always thought someone was just a bit heavy-handed on this one.

I think I'll live with it though.

A bit late to return to the maker! :D :D

Such a tiny little hole but didn't it bring the defensive line off the bench.
Yeah probably not going to impede the performance too much but substandard? Yes.
Nobody put that hole there with their finger nail and if they did it doesn't say much for the QC. Not saying much anyway because it was made too thin.
For the price I'd expect better.
Sorry. It's a no from me.
I now wonder if any others of this model have similar.

It would be a safety issue for me but I guess it depends on how you open the blade. The hole is right where I grasp the blade with my index finger when opening it. Then I rotate the handle downward while maintaining this thumb/index finger grip. The blade inevitably rotates a little between my thumb and index finger. In the picture the edges of the hole look jagged and sharp. A blood blister waiting to happen. Or worse.

I would certainly notify Derrick; but I'm sure he'll also see this.

I'm realizing, unless it's made by a man, most traditional knives have flaws. However, I see it as the knife's character, as each one is made individually.

You really can't feel it. The last pic I took was just in the perfect light making it look a lot worse than it is. I mean I've been using this knife regularly for almost a year, and I never even noticed it until I saw this thread.
I will agree that things like this should be unacceptable from the factory, but me and this knife have to much history to turn back now.

gotta love spell checkers. They don't parlez "knife".

I thought this thread was intriguing when Jeff started it, but when Erik chimed in, replicating Jeff's results, it became totally fascinating!!:thumbup:
I'm always learning new stuff around here!

I would do something to make it uniform and smooth sided. Would be easier to clean. But, do that as small as possible.
But not sure what to say to you to make it that way. 300

That is really strange. I haven't seen that before. If you get tired of it or it bothers you, let me know. We'll take care of you.

Ehe eh, you could have the nail nick be cut also from the other side, deburr, and still being able to open the knife. You'll be start calling it nail window :)
