hole in front of handle..

This may be a dumb question, but what's the hole in front of the handle for?

At some point there was some kind of D-guard offered with the design and one end would attach to the hole in the blade.

To secure the knife to a shaft as a spear head, the holes provide anchor points through which to run a cord or shoelace.
