hole in front of handle..

At some point there was some kind of D-guard offered with the design and one end would attach to the hole in the blade.
 
To secure the knife to a shaft as a spear head, the holes provide anchor points through which to run a cord or shoelace.
 
The front talon hole has also become a trademark for Busse Combat Knives, as they have been using it for years...
