A friend of mine, with a dremel tool, fashioned a Wave on his Delica. Not only does it work but it looks better than what Spyderco is doing with their Wave. Did Spyderco not consider this idea? Any in-put? Thanks.

Spyderco did consider the idea of just opening up the hole to make the "Wave". The idea was discarded to keep the opening hole 1) as an alternative opening method and 2) to maintain the trademark that the round opening hole represents.

The design process involved lots of participation from potential end line users.

How well does your friend's knife open one handed? (i.e. not pulling out of the pocket using the wave)

IIRC strength was also an issue. The blade remains quite a bit stronger with the current wave, opening up the hole would weaken the blade.

The end result of this process is called a "Tsunami" due to it being much bigger than a regular wave.

Also, using a zip tie to obtain the effect is called a "ghetto wave." Just FYI.

LOL. I had been considering the "tsunami" on my dragonfly, then someone mentioned the zip tie in another thread and I had to give it a try. So my Dragonfly now sports a "ghetto wave" I love it. I know, there's really no good reason for a wave on something like the dragonfly. I just love playing with my D4W and got the urge to be able to do the same thing with my Dragonfly. It works surprisingly well, and has the added advantage of being easier to take out of my pocket without snagging the wave if I don't want to.

Hi Lycosa,

Blade strength was the big issue. A numbe of people were doing that to their knives and discussed it on a forum. We did some blade break testing with the wave cut from the hole. There was a significant blade strength reduction.

I asked that people stop doing that, for safety reasons, and that we would create a waved model to service those customers.

Can you quantify exactly how much the blades were weakened? Versus non-modified blade?

I know it is not likely because of the direct competion with Emerson but is their any chance
of a high end MBC knife like the chinook or Manix getting a wave feature?
A Spyderco with Carbon fibre or G10 ,a S30V blade and a wave feature would rock.
