I`m currently trying to do hollow grinds with my bench grinder, and its not going well. right on the plunge line, it is swept up and then goes back down to the normal level very sharply. it looks like I put the plunge line on the corner of the grind stone. I think it is me, but I don't know what im doing wrong. I make sure it makes contact flat, not at an angle, or using uneven pressure. I don't know what im doing wrong. Any ideas?

I had a pic but couldn't figure out how to attach it

upload it to tinypic.com or a service like that.

Then with the link it gives you hit the image button in the editor here, then go to from url and paste the url there.

Bear with me I`m not a computer person.

Are you using any type of jig or anything? I use a c clamp and clamp to a chunk of metal which allows me to keep it nice and even on the grind.

No I was told not to use jigs, but I didn't think about using one. I was told they're like a crutch

As a relatively new maker and even newer to hollow grinding I had the same issue and it was from too much pressure at the plunge. I now apply the blade an inch or so out from the plunge, let it "settle" in the hollow and then TRY to smoothly work back to the plunge and then back out to the tip. Hope this helps and makes sense.

I'm not an expert on hollow grinding but sometimes it takes a recent mistake to recognize one. I also recently learned to drop the tip 5 degrees to assist in cleaning up the top of the grind line near the plunge (where your "swoop" is).

Hopefully some more experienced guys will chime in.

I'll add you can probably now "chase the grind" to straighten the grind line out. I think you've got the room and it will look fine based on that pic and an inexperienced opinion.

If you love to tinker..... Then trying for a decent hollow grind on a bench grinder will give you many hours of fun and enjoyment, and a nice pile of scrap steel, but if you're serious skip the bench grinder and go straight to a 2x72, out of seven attempts on a bench grinder I managed to get one OK grind ;0)
