I'm on my tenth knife. I finally got some actual 1095 instead of an old file. Way more better. I decided to try a hollow grind on my blu point multi tool. Not working out toed it good. It's a 2x36 with a 3 inch wheel. Is this even possible? I just spent about an hour and a half trying to get it even tip to tail. NOT GOOD. I gave up and just sharpened it. It's very sharp and tough. am I just wasting time try to do the hollow grind with this thing? I've done the flat and convex grinds on my 1x30, they are fine but "ugly" Thanks for any input.

Yea, you want to use wheels at least 10 inches if not larger for hollow grinding, most guys I know like them in the 14 inch range. A 3 inch wheel just wont work.

I use an 8" wheel. Lots of people started with an 8" wheel because that's about all you could get back in the day. I would have a 10 or 12 if I only had one.

I've got wheels from 1 1/2"-14". Beacuse I mostly make folders I still hollow grind on
an 8" wheel fairly often. If I had to pick one wheel for my work it would be a 10"

i know makers that grind with a 4" . I have used a 2" , 6 " , 8" and a 10" . It all just takes practice

Steve Johnson uses a 3" wheel on his sub-hilt fighters and he seems to do OK. A smaller wheel will track in the groove better than a larger wheel but, you've got to work within their limitations. You're not going to get a very tall grind out of a 3" wheel unless you ride the grind up; an advanced skill for sure. I would also say that on a small wheel like that, variable speed is pretty much a necessity.
