Hollow grinding/distal taper

I'm trying to broaden my horizons, so to speak, and I was wondering how one determines the rate of distal taper to apply when hollow grinding along the spine, ala loveless.

As of right now, I've been doing all hollow grinds that follow the blade edge, which is fairly easy to do as long as you keep steady.

it's not quite as straightforward when hollow grinding along the spine, though, because if you get the distal taper wrong, you're either going to have uneven edge geometry, or uneven grind along the spine.

I was thinking that I could measure the drop from spine in several points along the tip portion, and then use that to form a ratio of reduction for the distal taper along those points? Is that a reasonable way to do it, or am I complicating things?

I believe one of the approaches that can be used is to do the distal taper first and then the hollow grinding. Frank

I decided to bump this just in case anyone had any other pointers. I'm going to be starting a new batch and might want to try this on one of the blades.

You should invest in Steve R Johnsons video on building a sub hilt fighter. He goes into detail and shows how to grind it.

For me its in the wrist.. I allow the wheel to ride the spine on the way back to me, then close it, and stuff that wheel back in the bevel on the away push. A center line for reference is helpful.

Im going to start doing tapers with shims on my surface grinder before grinding bevels. I havent tried it yet but it should work
