Hollow Grinding wheel?

I was watching videos from Purgatory Iron works on YouTube and saw a wooden wheel made from layers of plywood glued together. It is mounted to a motor and a chisel makes it perfectly round. It is then covered in sand paper and used for hollow grinding. Has anyone seen or used one of these? Good idea / Bad Idea?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't do it, remember your hooking it up to a motor, and spining it at high speed. If the ply wood gives way, it could be bloody.

I've done it, And I love it! As long and you glue and screw the plywood generously, your good to go! I made a stand out of some scrap angle iron and over engineered it. a old truck axle makes a GREAT hub and axle to bolt the wheel to. just find pillowblock bearings to fit the axle shaft and your on your way. Here is my 23.5" glued, screwed and trued plywood wheel wrapped in 78" x 2" roll abrasive. 3/4 hp 1750 rpm motor 5:1 ratio for 355 RPM and approx 2200 SFPM. Independant articulated guides...THIS THING ROCKS! I set it so the wheel rotates up and away and not down and towards the guides on the side of the wheel allow knife blank to ride on the wheel all I have to do is drag it off and plant it in the same place the everytime. :D Please scuse the messy shop

I built one 25 yrs ago, pretty bumpy ride. I don't use it, just put the belt on so you could see.

WOW Jason!! That's a pretty neat set up. Looks like you have some other custom grinders too. is there any chance you could show us around some of those?

My others are just a Lowes special 8" bench grinder, and a Sears Craftsman 4x36 belt sander w/ a 6" disk sander.

the big blue thing is a hand crank post drill press made around the Civil War times. That'll wear you out! lol I've cleaned my shop since but it's a mess again. LMAO

The black and green thing is a single arbor buffer

Hehe I was thinking the wheels on the lower part of your buffer were for belts, not transportation.
