I understand that this technique may not be supported by some, but I have to ask for your advice and opinions....

Can you mount 2 grinders face to face and Hollow grind blades by applying blades upwards into the contact wheel. The sparks would be shooting downwards. I added some pictures to illustrate this technique.

Thoughts and advice welcome.

tyically doing it by hand involves reversing the rotation of the sanders so the sparks are going up. This allows the blade to float between the wheels, making it much easier to handle even larger blades.

Keeping the point nice is tricky, but certainly doable

sounds sorta dangerous if you get you hand stuck in between the wheels it will pull and smash and grind your hand to pulp. having them go upwards sounds like a better idea. just my 2 cents

ever see a pitching machine? thats basically what you are making. i agree with terry about it being dangerous. if you plan on going from the bottom with the edge up, that would work. you could see what you are doing. you would need to make sure the grinders were running the same speed. i think 2 belt sanders with soft contact wheels would work much better since there would be less bounce and belts dont need dressed.

first - look at the 2nd drawing...shows he's going to have a go at it from beneath (eliminating the "pinch" problem)

second - it's not a question of "if"....but "why". there are machines that will do this for you...have been around for a long time.

Usually, though...the reason for them is to increase production speed.

Hollow grinding isn't really that hard to learn.

Even with your setup...you'll still have to be careful to keep grinds straight (and the knife perfectly tangential to both wheels).

If you get ahold of one of these machines...by all means use it!
