You will void your Buck Warranty. The flat tang of the blade extends through the phenolic handle and into the solid pommel. The tang is heat treated(Rc 58), so depending on where you drill on the pommel or the handle, you may pass into the tang of the blade. Use a good drill bit...and eye protection...and hope for good luck.

Army dude,,, there are some other Bucks in the size range of the 119 with rubber, should you just be looking for a larger blade with grip. 639, 650, 655 and more....

True about the pommel and phenolic is the material the handle is made of. It is a plastic like material also used as an electric insulator.

ok so your saying the inside of the handle is actually made of a plastic material so the only thing that is keeping the tang in the handle is that the tang is securely fastened to the pommel more than anything els?

im just worried about the blade falling out of the handle when i drill through the pommel. should i be worried about it?

Yes I would be worried about drilling through the pommel. (depending on where)

O.K. the pommel and finger guard are aluminum.
The handle is black plastic (phenolic)
The blade and tang are all one piece.
The tang runs through the center of the Black phenolic handle.
The finger guard, phenolic (black) handle and pommel ("aluminum butt") all slide on over the tang.
They are epoxied on and the pommel (butt end of the knife) is pinned with an aluminum pin and buffed to a shine ;)
IF you were to drill a hole through the pommel (butt end of knife) you may drill through that pin... That wouldnt be good ;)
If you drill through the black part, depending on where you drill it, you may crack it or possibly drill into the tang.

Maybe this helps? Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!!

Hey Scott, where's that unassembled 119 for pics? :D

thanks WH4F that clears some things up for me just gotta wait till my paracord gets here so i can figure out where i need to put the hole exaclty

Stay to the lowest hanging part of the "birds beak"... "butt" (pommel) and that should avoid the tang and the cross pin holding everything together, but like Scott said, it may void the warranty. Good luck!

Ok,,I'll ask... Why are you needing to put a hole in it to wrap paracord.
Unless you think it will prevent it from slipping around or you just need a starting point.

There should be a way to tie the cord without a hole. I have tied fishing rods before and could see the same method being used here. If you wanted to secure it, maybe a drop of epoxy at the terminal end to keep it from sliding.

Jump over on some of the other forums and ask about methods. There are bunches of cord wrapped knives without a starter hole.

Just curious....

yeah i want to keep the cord from sliding around by putting it all under tension between two points unless u have a better way of doing it

I haven't ever wrapped a knife, so I guess I should be quiet. Good luck on tapping the hole.. Let us know how it goes. You will be the first to do that to a 119 that I know of. Will be interesting.

Check online for sites that have wraps some use tape to hold the start of the wrap. For the end you may need a hole and the way wh4f said to make the hole at the end of the beak wshould work to finish it off.

okay i've done it and it was no problem, as mentioned above drill through the end of the knife about 3/8" from the end and use a drill press if possible. it will void your warranty and in all honesty it'll ruin the looks of your knife, i know from experience. if you just want to wrap your handle no problem, look up how to {whip a rope end} this is a method of keeping a rope end from fraying, i learned it in the boy scouts. Just lay the 550 on the handle like it was a rope and wrap it tightly, it won't move and you will keep both your knife and your warranty intact. good luck
if you insist on drilling be very careful if you hang the end of the tang with the bit it gets kind of exciting. well you've got too many fingers anyway.

So army, let's get this straight.... Not a hole for a lanyard cord but to increase the grip in your paw? How about a 639 ? A discontinued knife but they are out there: what it is? The 639 is a 119 blade and a rubber handle molded on the tang. The blade can be had in plain 119 style, or the clip serrated, with or without a sawtoothed spine in green or black rubber. Clear? Do some searches for a Buck 639 or Buck Fieldmate and see what catches your fancy.

I do what I can....

the point of doing this mod is that i dont want to buy a new knife at the moment since that would cost alot more than some paracord from ebay

ahgar you say u have done it would u mind posting some pics of the final product?

I think the point that the others here are trying to make is that you're ruining a perfectly good knife...

Or a 619!!!!
