Hollow handled survival knives?

Welcome Ranger325.
RC-3 is such a great knife, you won't be disapointed.

I still got one of those Rambo II knives I bought in 1986 !
It has been through all my "stupid" stages and still chopping !
Heck I even use to throw it ! So this one is dumbproof.
I will do picture of that jurassic ramboid toy.

BTW David Morrell said he took Rambo name from Arthur Rimbaud (and from the Rambo Apples)...
I was raised in Arthur city...Charleville !

Shadow 4 single guard. Great Knife,I just Received it Saturday Will be having a sheath made for it as I do not like the factory offering

Man, those CRK hollow-handle knives look great!

TexaTony: im a CRK newbie so bear with me...is the blade-point the only difference between the Mountaineer and Shadow? Been to CRK's site and cant really see any major difference between the 2 models.

Never contemplated gettin one but im slowly getting there. Somebody posted that theyre being discontinued...Is that every hollow-handled models?

I think I read somewhere that they are discontinuing all the one piece, hollow handled knives from CRK..... Sweet blade TTD....

that is true on the one pieces... I had a shadow III but for my hands (M) the shadow III was to small for me & I flipped it to help aquire this one,I wish funds would allow for another but O-well...Great knife, cant wait t o use it outdooors....

So this is a Rambo II knife made of "440 Stainless" :o
Been used a lot and still sharp.
The backsaw is absolutly useless and dangerous.
After years of chopping there is no play in the handle.
ANd yes there is a compass in it (and it glows in the dark !:D)
I have rehandle it with leather. The round handle is not practical to intuitively know where your edge is... This is a main concern for a knife used for chopping wood. I prefer more flat handle or square handle. The Nkonka from CRK got flat flank which helps a lot.

I believe a RC-10 will be a much better tool in this range of knife.
I even think a RC-6 would be perfect too.

The RC3 is here for the scale.
The Trailmaster is a old second factory with confortable handle I made in Bocote wood... It replaced my Rambo Knife as "whack hard" tool. (My Favorite chopper is a Fallkniven A2 ...)

You can notice the recurve after many many resharping...
Also I changed the strap emplacement on the sheath to have it like Rambo in the movie (blocking the guard) and not on the handle like a scout knife...

kmm, crk discontinued the one piece line 12-1. the diff between the shadow & mountaineer is a spear point on the shadow and clip on the mount...both are great knives.

for someone on a buget I think smith&wesson makes a hollow handled knife.

Could you write a few lines of what you think of it when youve tried it? Tried googling for some reviews on the Mountaineer/Shadow but it seems most people have them locked up in safes...Couldnt find a single review of somebody who has a actually used their knife outdoors. And no pics of users either...

sure :)
I can tell you by just holding it it is a solid knife, A2 steel is great material for a knife to be made from and it is razor sharp from the box. I like the coating ,we'll see how it handles ,I for one like the Knurled handle... space inside the handle is limited but I will construct something to go into it,a fire kit of sorts surrounded by tinder tabs to reduced the rattling noise from contents inside handle.

The CRK's are worth every bit. I cannot believe why they are discontinuing that line of knives after all of these years. I have owned several and had to sell them off over the years when things got tight. I mean, this is like amputating a limb, discontinuing these knives. They have the Sebenzas and the one piece line and beyond that, nothing of real interest to me. It's like they make the best production folder and the best hollow handle knife and they're getting rid of 50% of what makes them...them.

This CRK Shadow III was used a lot after I wrote about it. You can read the article: http://www.donrearic.com/crshadow3.htm

It also explains how they are made. I have a friend who is a longtime CRK Dealer and he had the cutaway displays in his shop and allowed me to photograph them years ago.

the person who builds or mills the one piece knives for CR is retiring after 28years

Does the handle have an o-ring and is it truly watertight?

Only thing I can think of that will fit in that space and be actually useful is a fire kit.

Also, how bad is it for rotating in the hand under heavy use? I've been thinking of getting a Mountaineer, just don't know how the round handle does in hand.

Yes and oh yes. :D

I have tested them in a five gallon bucket of water overnight. If you stay submerged overnight, you won't need matches any longer. :D

You can get a $20.00, $10.00 and a $5.00, button compass, cottonball to make sure nothing rattles and serves as a piece of tinder, Spark-Lite or small, cut-down ferrocerium rod and enough braided fishing line, two splitshot and two Eagle Claws and two Life-like lures in there. Believe it or not.

Basic direction finding, eat if you are near water or bait the plain hooks for birds or squirrels...light a fire, pay for a cab or a ride.

You won't be hacking and chopping with the smaller models, with the larger ones, you get a bit of a roll going on at times, the grip is very well checkered. It's a good grip but it will eat on your hand after a while if you're wacking on something.
