Wash it with soap and water. That will take care of the issue.

I've bought a few knives that reeked and that has always taken care of the stink of stale smoke.
 
Thanks for all the tips everyone. The knife has already gotten better from just leaving it out of the box overnight. The box however is far gone. I'll probably just let it air out and over time it should get better. I'll also put a little baking soda in there.

I didnt make this thread with any intention to return the knife. I imagine you could, especially since the listing has the knife as new. I wouldn't return a knife over this though.
 
Two things:
A) This should be moved to GB&U.
B) We should know would the seller was, so we can make our own informed decision as to whether to deal with the person or not.
 
Ethanol is a very good solvent for nicotine and smoke stains. Try getting a bottle of cheap vodka and use that as solvent to clean the knife.
