Would a Sharpmaker work for de-rusting or should I get a file? I don't want to get a blade that I can't maintain.

Sharpmaker can keep the edge, but you'd probably need a light sanding on the edge. Some sandpaper across a wood block would touch it up quickly if you had issues.
