Holy CRAP - 784 lb anvil on eBay

Matchlessantiques is offering collectors this Record Making anvil...

"is offering collectors...."

Collectors?

Anvil collectors?

Are there really anvil collectors?

If this is true, every man on this forum needs to know about it so that when his wife whines, "Is that another knife???," he can reply, "At least I don't collect anvils!" :D

stick around her long and you ll see that just about every blade smith round here at least tries to collect anvils

Just looking at it, makes me break out in a cold sweat.

Only a knife maker or anvil collector can truly appreciate something this beautiful.

Drooolll:eek:

I know many knife makers but cannot recall a single collector of anvils.:D
Are there any on line here?

Fred

I wonder what the shipping cost would be on it, lmao!!!
I know I can't afford it; couldn't pick it up anyhow.

I bet a three pound hammer sounds sweet, hitting this monster.

I know a fella's got half a dozen anvils on any given day. Smith, but not a bladesmith. Actually, he does a whole lot more buying and selling junk than smithing anything, but who am I to judge? :)

I know some guys who literally have a BARN full of old anvils and blacksmithing tools...yes...there are collectors...never bid against an anvil collector or an Amish guy in an auction....

I bought my anvil from a kid attending RIT... he collected them, and actually kept five of them in his dorm room! Mine was the smallest he had on hand at 129 pounds, and the biggest was @ 290 lb. Peter Wright.

In his dorm room.

I agree, that's freakish!

Heh, i can certainly see the apeal for collecting them. Sometimes its just hard to let them go once you have them. That being said I'm practical and when I upgrade my anvil, I've been selling the old ones to help defer the costs of the upgrades =D

I've got a 126lb peter wright for sale right now even, since i upgraded to a 150 lb one when the price was right

you better believe there are anvil collectors....most of whom will never use it, period. They see the anvil as a piece of history....no longer a tool.

It hearkens back to a different day and age...easy to get lost in the romance of yesteryear...especially if you've got an old anvil.

Woooooooooooooo

I had no idea this post would draw this much attention, although I admit when I saw that listing on eBay MY JAW DROPPED.

I have a motorcycle that weighs less then this pup. Hell my entire garage weighs less then this sucker.

Being grinder oriented I can only begin to guess the appeal of such a tool and my wife thought I was weird when I bought a saddlemaker's clamp many years ago. Sheeesh.

Syn

Upon reflection, I see there appeal as a collectors item.
There is a lot of history in an old anvil. I have a hundred pounder, that has, obviously, had a great deal of use, before it came to sit in my shop. I wonder now, what its history is.

Fred

I have known several anvil collectors, they are many.

Have four and only use one, guess I collect anvil also :D

Funny you should mention that Butcher Block. I am SERIOUSLY looking to upgrade to a 2hp motor from the 1hp I have now.

The thing of it is that Rob and Rashid have me thinking I should switch to a 3 Phase 230v 2hp with a VFD to replace my 1hp DC with a custom controller. It's confusing to say the least. Of course then I can move my current motor to my band saw and have an infinite number of speeds there.

Ohhhhhhhhhh well this all has nothing to do with that 784lb anvil. (Can you legitimately hijack your own post?)

Syn

the problem with the longer belt grinders is getting the belts. You probably still need a 2x72 for finishing.

syn - 2HP is da bomb compared to 1HP....or even 1.5HP. I've had all three and could easily stop (not just bog down, STOP) the others. The 2HP takes some effort to stop it (but not that hard anymore it seems).

I'm looking now for a 3HP....maybe a 5HP DC VFD setup. No bogging down, period. It would be worth it.

Did I mention that I work my tools way too hard?

:D :p

Its a disease........But I could stop any time I wanted to ........I just don't wan't to!:D
It started with a cheap chinese 50 pounder, then a 145 lb Wilkenson or some such, then the 185 Hay Budden, then the 300 lb Kolswa...... As you can see, its a progressive illness;) Oh then theres the 96 lb mousehole my wife got me for Christmas 3 years back (how cool is that?!)
I actually manage to use the lot (even the Chinese one has its place when I'm too lazy to lug anything else).
I'm not sure I'd qualify as a "collector" per se, just can't resist a good buy on a good tool. The history thing is pretty cool though.

Go for it happycat......................

You KNOW you want to.
