Yep, Yvsa, it's rust. Bangkok is extremely humid and these have never been properly maintained. Luckily, there's not much pitting--just surface rust. Should come off nicely when I get a chance to spend some time with them.
Sylvrfalcon, I have seen the picture of the man that you saw. In fact, it's all over Thailand! He's the king, and this month was the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne. I can honestly say that, from what I saw, the people of Thailand genuinely adore and revere their king. From the things people told me, he has been a very good king, and very caring towards his people. His initiatives have really helped the poor of Thailand. And his sword indeed looks cool!
I'll have to measure these swords, clean them up, and take some more pics sometime!
