A good point was brought up in another discussion and I wanted to bring it up again in a fresh thread. I recently purchased a Sugar Creek kiln and had it brought to my attention that it wasn't UL/CSA listed and I would be on my own if it burned my shop down. The Orton Controller is UL listed but as far as I can see (emails sent) the kiln is not. This would be the same if I had made my own kiln and bought an Orton box. I know there are many makers who have home built kilns/forges. What are your thoughts/experiences with codes and insurance?

Most of my home-built fire hazards are operated outdoors or de-energized when I am not around. As soon as you sell your first knife anything related to your knifemaking is not covered by your homeowners insurance anyway, that is why I have business insurance. I'm sure if you talk to your homeowners insurance agent and tell them you have a forge on your back porch or in your attached garage, once they get past the blank look and do some research they will tell you that you need to cease and desist or get a different agent.

Forge=homebuilt open fire in the middle of your shop. As page says, knifemaking takes you out of the realm of homeowners insurance from the get-go. The UL listing status of SugarCreek kilns is the least of your worries.
