Home Built Surface Grinder

If it's like mine, the four holes are tapped into the bearing block for M6 screws which have a minor diameter of about 5mm.

Anyone else running 3M Trizacts on their SGA? I started a couple months ago and am loving the results.

Do you have any pictures? I bet those Trizact belts leave a great finish.
I have a spring in the shop I just did last night. I'll snap a couple shots and post up in a bit. They do leave a great finish and they last a long time. It's the type of work they were designed for.

The only two belts I've been using on my surface grinder are 120 grit VSM ceramics and A65 trizacts. I've been quite pleased with the results.

These are all good accounts to hear. It sounds like this is going to be a very worthwhile build.

I now have to work on a side project though. The amount of weight that would have to hang off the cross slide concerns me, so today I'm going to work on modifying my grinder to tilt to the side. I've been wanting that capability for a while so it works out.

I have a tilting grinder and only use the surface grinding attachment in the horizontal position. It is extremely heavy but feels completely weightless and effortless in the horizontal position.

That's a nice slide setup for sure. I like the 5 bearing version - wish I had that. You'll find more uses for the SGA than you ever imagined, and a hard wheel is best for best finish.
I second the hard wheel... All my rubber wheels seem to have run out. I had a custom aluminum one and and it's perfect. Rubber ones always seem really wavy

I have to hope that custom rubber wheels turns out okay for me 😬

Where did you get a custom aluminum wheel made?

where have you been getting these wavy wheels?
Contact rubber, Sunray, and the one in particular was one I bought from reeder. Have you ever stuck a dial indicator on your wheels? I've never seen wheels like this one from reeder... A snap ring for the bearing to sit against?! I think that was a major part of the problem with this particular wheel

Another knife maker who has a lathe... I'll have to ask him if he's fine with me posting up publicly. But honestly it's basically just a tracking wheel that's been lathed flat, same thing.
Man that's excellent, do you have a picture of that wheel?
Sure!

Why is everyone without a mill using rectangular magnets? When I eventually get around to building one of these I'm planning on turning a plate into swiss cheese and pressing round magnets into the holes. Is there something I'm missing?

I don't have a mill, so my plan was to find a file about the width of the magnets, grind a chisel edge on it, and hand scrape the channels. Just clamp a straight piece of steel accordingly so as not to make crooked channels. We'll have to see if this idea actually works, though.
