Home Defense--Thanks

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Like the XDM handgun too,but illegal in Cali..

The XDM is not illegal in California, but rather it is not certified for sale. There is a big difference. This means that you can legally acquire it by other means, such as via a PPT with someone in the state who owns one (a LEO who is exempt from the certified roster or someone who recently moved to California and brought one with him/her), or as a gift from an out-of-state grandchild, child, parent, or grandparent (this also must be effected through a dealer, but is otherwise exempt from the certified roster).

Oh, and believe it or not, my AOW is completely legal in California because it is federally-registered (since 02/1988). California Penal Code 12020(b)(8) explicitly and specifically exempts AOWs (except for pen guns) from California Penal Code 12020(a).

It might be stating the obvious but if burglary is a problem you should consider going through with your wife a few drills for clearing the house .... the two of you should learn how to do so as a pair .... your wife covering the rear arc and both of you learning how to enter a room and split the arc's left and right .... statistically working as a pair significantly improves your survival rate .... and it makes your wife take the firearms side of things seriously.... and the need to practise.

If you go off on your own work out drills for what happens if there is gunfire and what is the all clear .... a friend was nearly shot by his wife coming back into the bedroom after chasing a burglar off in Africa .... they had all the guns and gear .... but had never thought to work out what to do beforehand ....

Very nice. I bought a Benelli M1S90 many years ago as one of my first home defense weapons, they are very reliable.

Mr. Lunde---My older brother wants to give me a brand new XDM-he has several. Can you update me on what I need to do to be legal. I appreciate your post.

Peter PHWS---Thanks to advice from 230 Grains a couple months ago,my wife have been through all the drills. She's taking this seriously since my grandaughter stays w/ us at times. If we're separated she knows what to do and we have signals. Thanks for the tips.

Great choices! A buddy of mine bought the same shotgun and I got to check it out last weekend. I'm impressed with it.

Good deal about you and your brother... funny how guns (and knives) can bring people together. But be careful... the gun bug bites just as hard as the INFI bug. ;)

thetret, you wrote:

Unfortunately, this exemption does not apply to gifts from siblings. The term that is used is Immediate Family Member, which is clearly defined only as grandchild, child, parent, or grandparent.

A couple of animals that bark would work quite well with your hardware as part of an overall defensive strategery.

Oh ya - 12 gauge = Zone Defense

Boom - that zone is clear.... Boom - now that zone is clear.

Point and shoot. Nice and simple :)

Update: We went to the range this morning and the guy that is helping us-former spec ops--talked my wife into shooting his XDM and she loved it.She understands we can't own one,but now she wants a similar .45. She was impressed w/ the fact that she'd only have to shoot an intruder once when she saw the hole in the target. 34 years of marriage and you still learn something new about them. I almost passed out;doesn't sound like her at all. So what's similar to an XDM? She wants a "pretty" one,but she can get over that. We're not getting it yet. I told her we had to get a lot better w/ the 9mm first.
