When I first started to carry the Leatherman squirt, the metal file was the last tool I ever thought I'd ever use. I started to carry it for the small pliers and drivers. But like a lot of things, I was wrong. I've actually used the file enough that I wold miss it if it broke or wasn't there.
Like you, I live in a mostly urban environment, with visits to the woods and river. A small SAK or multitool is invaluable.
I always think the metal file/saw is the most underrated tool on SAK(or any MT), almost like a best kept secret. A metal file/saw can do what a wood saw can do in a pinch, but not the other way around.
