home made fast quenchant question

One of the best things I have done as a newbie is spend lots of time working on an 0-1 blade, heating it in a forge - checking it w/ a magnet.....

And dunking it in a pan of hot water....

Ping! Ping! Ping!

The straight bar took a Northbound turn and tore the edge in about 4 places while it made the "ping-ing sounds." The edge was too thin, and I took it too hot. (That about cured me away from water- at least for a bit)

I have had some luck w/ olive oil, but - I plan on getting some Parks. And I won't quench in water until I learn more!

Guys,

I don't understand why you don't buy a couple of gallons of legitimate quenching oil and have guarantied best result possible? Why do you even want to save a couple bucks by risking ending up with inferior knife?
Quenching oil is not that expensive.
