hello forgers everywhere. not the bogus check type. I have made several 01 blades fixed type. kitchen and camp type. I really want to get into stainless steels but lack the equipment and more importantly the knowhow. I've seen utube vids on firebrick construction, but none that specify how to add the heat. burner type and pyrometer insertion. I have some 440c and D2 that im dying to work. if somebode can hip this newbie i would appreciate any direction. I own a
B tank acety and some high output swirl tips. dont know if this would be a satisfactory heat source. I viewed a auberins pyrometer for 50 bucks which im thinking about.
Thanks

You are not ready to hot work stainless steel with that . Stainless steel needs HT ovens with controlled programmers. You can do stock removal and send it to a HTer for hardening.

Forging stainless is a real trick, too. Not for an inexperienced maker. Again, stock removal is the better way to go.

As to building a forge, the stickies have a good bit of info.

^^^^^^^^ listen to this guy, he know what he's talking about. If you have any questions just ask there are many knowledgable people here. :0)

Yes, I forgot my manners.

Welcome to Shop Talk.

Thank you for filling out your profile. I saw that you were not a kid ( older than me), were retired, and new to knifemaking. That allowed a more tailored answer.

I just got my Auberins pyrometer and PID controller today. I am looking forward to testing them out this weekend. Welcome to the forum.

forging 440c is hard , not really technically , its just really hard.

Its like forging normal steel , only it takes 2-3x longer because its that hard to move with the hammer.

that and it has weird forging temps and cracks alot
