Home made strops

This spot reserved for ugly home-strop photos. I use smooth side out, but if it starts to glaze over too much, I hit it with a copper brush and it will take and hold any polishing compound better without being as rough as the inside. I use Maas metal polish, I love that sheeeit for mirror edges and it is not anywhere near aggressive. I use the same stuff on our wedding rings, works great and no scratches!

You can strop on plain leather, but it takes longer. I finish on plain leather for a nice mirror!

sure, you can use almost anything including tooth paste. We have a hardware store here that sells tubes for buffing wheels that cost $2.50 each or you can buy stropping compound for $10 to $12 per square. The kits either come with black and white or black, green, and white. Most of the time you only need white to touch up the edge.

I took a 22 inch piece of sanded 2x4 and glued a 19 inch, thick strip of good leather the same width smooth side up with green compound from lee valley

cheap and it works great, especially on large knives.

Here's my stropping gear; they are all made from a cheap leather belt I found at a thrift store for less than $1. Each one is pictured with the abrasive that's on it. On the bottom one, the leather floats above the surface making a mean convexing strop.

I purchased a piece of scrap leather from a major internet retailer for $9 and carved a handle on a piece of oak. Made 3 of these, one for myself, my brother, and my dad. Theirs look nice, mine is all business. One side for black compound, one green, one red, and plain leather for the final polish, all smooth side out. Definitely cheaper to make your own than to buy one of these.

Well I thought it was time to make a new strop. My son and I went to a local knife and gun show today and I picked two nice 1 1/2" x 18" pieces of leather for $3.00 I made four nice strops for for $3.00 as I had the wood laying around. Now to get them dirty.
