...I think that without a doubt, Trax is the adventurous one of the group these days when it comes to doing modifications at home. As I look through the archives I see quite a few of the fellas in the forum, who have been in it a long, long time have also done things like Trax, and apparently did it quite well. Maybe we are more prone to posting things we have or have done in pictures than the people who've been here for eons, and that is why we aren't aware of some of them today. One of them stands out in my memory of looking through the archives...his name is WinDancer. When I look in to see what he's done it almost sounds like it's Trax with a different name. It would be nice if we could get him to add to the knowledge base we currently are using with all the experience he obviously has. I sure hope he's still a member. Jeff Hubbard is always willing to give advice as is Joe Houser and John Foresman and Larry Oden and I could go on and on with the names of a lot of the "old timers"...we shouldn't be afraid to ask and we shouldn't be afraid to "play" with our knives at home. We can't make 'em better than Buck...but we can make 'em just exactly the way we want them. We should just remember not to ask Buck to fix what we've messed up...LMAO...as I was worrying about as I "blasted" away at that 110.

I have 2 501s with wobbley blades. I thought that I would try to snug the blades in the front bolsters.
I took one of the knives and used my all-purpose tool (hammer) and whacked the front bolsters a couple of times.
I am now reporting the results of that home fix. It scared the hell out of the Chihuahuas, Made my wife think I was having a stroke, and did nothing to tighten the blades.
I am going to mail my 501s to Mr Houser to see if Buck has a bigger hammer.
So much for my home fix.

Post some of the thread URLs, Darryl...I like learning new things...and I can always use new ideas... :)

I just copy what Buck has already done... ;)

Darryl - His site says he was getting out of production knives and into custom made...and selling off his Bucks... :D

:D  :D  ...Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha ...Gotta love ingenuity don'tcha???...Darned if I haven't been known to whip out my "all purpose tool" myself like that. More often than not I end up running to Sears for a replacement of the ratchet that stopped working suddenly or adding to the landfill with the results...:D  :D

...Trax...Back when WinDancer was doing his "Home Modifications" he asked some of the people who would know the most about Buck knives and their production. He too was an adventurous sort like you are. He wasn't afraid to take one of these knives apart and make it the way he liked it. He did not , however, post pics that I'm aware of. Those that I did happen across by him, and some others, are long since gone...though the URL's are there they do not work. Here's a thread where he gets some info and help from someone who happens to know a great deal about the process of building a Buck knife.

:p ...Speaking of "Home Modifications" to Buck knives...I ran across this one that just doesn't have the look of a "factory modification to me...LOL...What do you think??......LOL...I really want to know if this could possibly be an authentic Buck modification. I do know that when early FG knives were produced, the initial prototypes were handmade but I just have a difficult time thinking this is one of them...  :D

Not so! :grumpy: I just can't find the Buck stuff I want...or if I do, some eBay speculator buys it before I can get my bid in...

I have one last dual-blade to do. That will make my 4-knife dual-blade mini-collection complete. Got all the parts...just need time...

The epoxy on my Elkodon rescale 110 is drying...I cut the nail nicks in my 442 bladed knives...Got my Jantz order the other day, so I have a good selection of Micarta and Elk...

Hey! Here's a good one...I was tripping over dog toys the other night...and one of them is a real bone...hollow, kind of square shaped, and thick...thick enough for a 110!!! :D

It's also well polished...

...   ...You been reading my mind??? :) I got a 1 1/2" end mill downstairs...I was thinking of making my own fingergroove 110...but I need a good scan of a real 110FG to get the dimensions right...[coff, *hint*, coff]... ;)

(BTW: You forgot to show the initials on the bolster) :D

:D ...LMAO...you're right about the dog bone thing Trax...LOL...I just don't think that what you've found would be stabilized to use for scales...LOL...But ya never know with what thet feed to animals now a days. My pooch goes through those things in half an hour...Sure wish we could do something about the Ebay thing...I've kind of given up there for a while. Just did pick up a 110 FG from an online store though...:D :D

This is the best I can do for ya Trax...You can at least get the proportions for the grooves and a good estimate of the radii...

You know, I'd like to see the hand that modification is meant to fit....or maybe I don't.

Lets compare that homemade 110FG with a real one...

I think I kind of like the homemade one better... :D

:barf: :barf: ...nope...That turned out like passing gas in a cardboard box...

That's OK...That one I posted above can be blown up...

Hey! How about a 110FG with *5* finger notches??? :D :D :D

 :D ...LOL...Maybe for you my friend...but NOT for these sausages I have attached to each hand...LMAO...:D :D

I just went down and made some measurements...we can definately cut finger grooves in a plain-Jane 110...maybe even a 112... ;)

...I have end mills from .750 to 3 inches...maybe I'll send 'em out if ya need a weird one...

I am going to take you up on that... :D

Here we go -

110_FG.jpg

We just need to cut into the bolster a little bit...maybe 1/8" or so...and about 1/16" deep into the liner...

Imagine Mike's S30V 110 with finger grooves... :D (Or does Cabela's already offer an Alaskan 110FG???)...Ooh, ooh...another project!!! A Cabela's S30V Alaskan w/polished blade & finger grooves!!!

...Those will be easy cuts Trax...Just have to work out the clamping...and I don't think Cabellas offers a FG version...
