...Just have to work out the clamping...

I made up a clamping jig to mill down the Elkodon scales...didn't I post that last pic???

However, I made up an epoxy sealant and coated the porosity in that 2nd scale...and the coloring changed...(I have to wait for it to cure before I can handle it)...it looks completely different now...

...No ya didn't Trax...and it looks by my measurements that 1.500 would be just about where you'd want to go with the grooves too...

Hmmmm...Should I FG this 110, with the Elk scales??? Or do a completely different one???

I'm thinking you should try it out on a "toss-away" if you have any busted Ebay deal knives left. Pick the worst one to run the prototype...I always cover all the coordinates before I fire for effect...LOL...Don't forget ...you're gonna have to hand blend the intersection points of the cutter's arc from groove to groove. That should only be 3 points to blend...Four if you go to 5 grooves...

Hey! How about a 110FG with *5* finger notches??? :D :D :D

Do you have an extra finger?

I've always thought the finger grooved models were harder to get a good grip on  but hey... that's just me.

   ...Been doin' some thinkin' about this new "potential" project of your's Trax...Using an end mill may be a bit of overkill in this project. You're not removing enough material to warrant the use of a "stock hog" like an end mill...Do ya have a drum sander???

Trax,
Have you thought about possibly leaving the elk scales a little proud of the brass bolsters? What I mean is, on my stag scale folders, they are quite a bit thicker than the wood scales. Wouldn't that leave them less susceptible to color change?

Yes; in fact, I ordered extra blank Elk scales for just that reason. But if you recall that little Frost folder I posted the pic of some time back (along with the monster Parker), I wanted to try the sanded-smooth look first.

It doesn't look bad; in fact, it'll probably look pretty good when I'm done sanding/buffing.

A Buck 110/112 is not a good candidate for stag; they're too flat, and the stag is too rounded. Leaving the scale "proud" in the center and buffing the ends to match the bolsters is about the only way to do it and still retain the outer texture (the bark).

I'm not a big fan of bark to begin with; Sambar and Elk are about the only ones I've seen that I like.

No; no drum sander...but I could mount a 1 1/2" sanding wheel in the mill and use that...if I can find a 1 1/2" sanding wheel locally...

Using a mill to take off 1/16" of material isn't too radical...side-cutting, I'm thinking...same way I cut the nail nicks...We're only cuttin two pieces of .060" brass and a bit of wood...plus a bit of the thicker bolster on each end...

I'm running out of "junker" 110's again...they keep turning into cool looking projects... :D

Mike - can you give me a measurement? How thick are they?

Here's what my Elks look like now -

I may just rip these off and try again... :grumpy:

Trax,
On the new one I just got before Christmas, the stag is approximately 7/32" at the widest point. On the four dot 110, call 1/4"
Mike

 ...That 4 dot is the ol' slab-sided version isn't it Mike?...Do you think they might have used a thicker scale because of the heavier frame that knife has and they wanted to keep that scale size to bolster size ratio consistant?

I think you're probably right. It's a real monster that's for sure!
