I like midsized knives (can also carry at times) although I'm sure larger blades have their advantages.

Curious about the 3/16th Wild Thing vs. the Pug. (I won't say what I think yet!) Also, curious about some other contenders? Thanks!

Hi, Akula!

I like the Wild Thing, although mine is 1/4" stock. It seems very well balanced and alive in the hand. Why would you want to go to 3/16"? Walt

Of the two I say Wild Thing. Have you looked at anything from Newt Livesay? The Company knife is pretty nice for the money. Of course I prefer Mossberg 590 for home protection.

for any serious defense, i'd definitely use a gun. Knives are good tools and all, but i really thing if you were shooting at someone, they'd be more likely to flee from your house than if you shook a knife at them. they can shoot you if you have a knife and are across the room, and there's nothing you can do about it except take PCP. right? (on the PCP, you can still attack him until he shoots your head off.)

i would use a knife if that was the only thing i had, but with planning, i'd try to have a gun nearby that is easily accessible. but i don't worry about getting attacked because THE RULES don't apply to me.

Knives and Cars...
Simple but EXPENSIVE.

Unocide is right,a firearm is the way to go,not only for effectiveness, but as I've said before:do you really want to get up close and personal and poke holes in some slimeball in the age of HIV and Hepatitus C? I prefer to keep my distance.

I've never thought of the pug as a good guard dog.

Shootist16, Chinook and the others are right: large dog, short-barrel 12 gauge pump.

Save your knives for work and play.

Getting away from what is actually the best home defense tool and going back to which would I go with. PUG, hands down anytime. It is a very deceptive blade. When you pick it up, you feel a nice solid knife. Good weight for a medium size blade. The grip is where this knife really comes into it's own. It feels like it is definetly a part of you. It moves and transitions with extreme ease.

I have handled both and would pay the extra cash for the PUG. Just my humble opinion.

If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance,
baffle them with your BS.

Subject-wise, I'd take the Pug, simply because I have one, and am used to it. Realistically, I'm grabbing the Cold Steel Warlord leaning against the wall next to my nightstand.
Or maybe I'm just a sicko

Crowinghorse.. I'm still laughing!! As for home defense? get a gun and then , this is the important part , learn how to use it. Don't just go to the range 2 or 3 times a year and think your good to go. with the exception of those who have military or LE training.. you'll be 50 percent or less of your normal skill level when the balloon goes up for real. And you'll do under pressure what you do in practice. So practice realistically as much as you can. practice "tactical" setups and think out beforehand where you can take cover.. reload.. advance.. and retreat. know before hand where the "zones of fire" are in your home.. where you can shoot without rounds overpenatrating into your next door neighbors house.. especially important for apts, twins and townhouses. keep a cell phone and extra set of keys in the bedroom.. so you can still communicate if the bg's kill your phone..( all they have to do is lift a reciver..and whala.. no phone..) or throw a set of keys to the responding officers if need be. you should also figure out a plan to get everyone in the house together.. you'll wanna know where everyone is.. keep them secured and safe and not give up a hostage to a bg. don't mean to go on here... just some things to think about. and havin' been there done that... trust me.. gun vs knife.. gun wins everytime. and considering that an intruder in all probabiliy will have a gun.... makes the choice of a knife as a primary self defense weapon kinda silly. my personal choice is a 5 inch "tactical" 1911 w/230 gr. hydroshocks.. backed up by a Bushmaster 16 inch HBAR w/m193 ball ammo. one other thought , take the time to learn the laws in your state.. because if your ever involved in a shooting.. chances are you'll be subject to some sort of civil action even if it's a clean shoot. Again... to get off subject and ramble on..

A baseball bat behind the door.

Will get you out of trouble without getting you into more trouble afterwards. Try explaining STABBING (!!!!) an intruder!

Also, if I had to participate in a duel where one would have a baseball bat and the other one a mid-sized knife, surely I would pick the bat!

ok Time for a devils advocate. I do not agree that a gun is always the best defense. I also dont agree that a knife is less efective than a bludgeon. Now let me clear up a few things. I have a Rem 870 mag shotgun next to the bed with an extention. But I also keep an 8 inch fighter next to my bed also. When I rented a house for a while I felt alot better with the 870. Lots of room and less chance of hitting the loved ones. I had a wife and daughter in the house as well as my dog. Now I live in a studio apartment (one Room) With a girlfriend. Somehow I feel better in this situation with my knife. I dont have enough swing room with furniture in the apartment to use a bat effectivly and pulling up the shotgun and getting into a shooting match in a one room apartment with my girfriend in the apartment just seems stupid. My plan should someone come through the fire escape or something is to fake sleeping until their close enough to lunge at and stab. I dont have to worry about room to swing a bat or accidently hitting the muzzle of a shotgun into something and discharging the weapon. A knife only needs a short space to do damage and if you get inside quick ....well its a plan. I guess Im saying it really depends on the circumstances. Oh ..and of the two Id go with the Wildthing !!

Great responses all. A shootgun shot through a closed door is probably the best bet - just don't shoot your little boy or girl. Up close and personal, I like the Pug. The grip is great and that counts for a lot. The Pug would be my first choice - try to take it out of my hands and you'll get a very nasty cut. (Not to say the Wild Thing is chopped liver - but the grip is not as good.) I think a 16" ASP light baton is a very nice item, as is a blackjack. (If you're an intruder in my house, anything goes- I have two little kids and a wife.)
Thanks!

Knives are VERY close range weapons. If the intruder is close enough for you to use a knife, they are also close enough to use a knife. Seems like kinda bad odds to me.

Was a LEO for several years, and saw the results of many home break-ins, attacks, etc. Shotguns seemed to scare away more intruders BEFORE they could hurt anyone, and most certainly did the best job of preventing them from hurting anyone if they decided to stay and play. Very hard to miss someone in a hallway when using a shotgun. Somewhat easier to miss when using a handgun... given the stress of the situation, etc. Also, hadgun rounds tend to penetrate walls much more easily than lead shot.

A knife would be my LAST choice as a home defense weapon. Too many possible bad outcomes.

I have both the Pug and 3/16" Wild Thing.

Let me preface my comments with "BUYER BEWARE"! I encourage you to read this to the end.

Hands down I go for the Wild Thing for several reasons:

1. Although the grip on the Pug is sexy, it has too much form fitting on the grip. (Deep Finger groove, deep pinky catch and too much tapering in the palm swell area) If you have to grab the knife in an awkward manner (like in the dark, quickly as the bad guy is coming through your bedroom door)or if you want to go from sabre grip to reverse grip without dropping the Pug, you're screwed. I have tried these variations several times without having to wake up out of a deep sleep!

The Wild Thing is the most ergonomical grip out there IMHO. All you have to do is grab it and you're ready to go. Sabre to reverse grip changes are a breeze.

2. The 3/16" Wild Thing, because it is thinner and made from 01 steel, is much sharper, much easier to sharpen, doesn't dull as fast and is quicker in the hand. My Pug came dull as a butter knife and had to be completely reground (Pain with ATS 34) before it would be hair poppin sharp. The Wild Thing due to its' blade geometry, steel, selective tempering and thickness is the sharpest blade I have ever handled.

3. The price for the 3/16" Wild Thing is the same as the Pug and the WT is one inch longer.

4. My Pug, after it was fully paid for ($370 plus shipping) came with a smeared logo. I was told that it would be remedied when the maker got to the next batch of knives to be bead blasted and etched. So much for a "Custom Maker". Having been fully paid for and waited on for several months, it should have been done immediately. Period! Mad Dog would have fixed this type of problem in 3 days and paid all shipping to and from his shop. The Pug maker wanted me to pay to ship it back to him. BS!!!

5. The Kydex sheath belt loop on the Pug broke off the very first day I received it. Due to the poor response on the logo problem, I cut off the extra Kydek and made it into a Static cord IWB system. Mad Dogs sheaths are of much higher quality and I have 8 of them for my various 6 knives. 4 High Ride, 2 slip sheaths, a jump qualified combat sheath and a Dundee rig, with a static cord sheath being made for my Voodoo child. IMHO they are the best!

6. The Wild Thing has a much deeper belly (which I prefer) making it a superior slicer with an incredibly sharp point for thrusting.

7. Shannon Lew at Mad Dog Enterprise is a far superior dealer than the Pug dealer, and would have made things right immediately should I have had a problem. The Pug dealer only said I could get my money back. I didn't want my money....I wanted $370 quality, service and my knife made right. More BS!

If you would like more input please email me and I will share more data with you regarding the Pug and the superior (IMHO) Wild Thing.

Thanx for reading,
ACK
