Home Protection

Robert,

"1. the most important ingredient, a wife that "knows" how to use all of the above"

I couldn't agree more! If the members of the household don't know how to use the devices of protection they're no protection at all. Unlike some people, I know that inanimate objects don't suddenly animate and attack people (especially if they're unprovoked

).

Also, it's very unrealistic to expect one person to be able defend the entire house in a crisis situation. That's a very poor strategy. Hopefully, most people won't come up against that situation in their lifetime, but it never hurts to be prepared. Especially if you live way out in the boonies where help is a long way off.

There are some general principles of home defense, but it is also important to think about your individual situation. That is particularly critical when considering what weapons to keep on hand. (Not that I consider weapons the most important aspect of home defense, it's just the one I wanted to talk about.)

There are some people who are just not going to use a weapon under any circumstances. A lot of people don't have the physical capabilities or the training to use certain types of weapons. It is important to be honest with yourself about all of this.

My wife and I got a shotgun for our primary home defense. At the time she was nervous about it, but we both took a class and now we both practice with it regularly. If that hadn't worked out we'd have gotten rid of it and looked at other options.
