I hate that I have to lock my door. I take most basic precaution by locking my doors and having an alarm (and the aforementioned Neapolitan Mastiff). I haven't retrofit dead bolt locks on all my doors. I guess its the right thing to do but if they are going to force the door, its just as easy to smash a window and go in. Where I live going to bars on windows would be overkill.

The two times we were robbed, I'm pretty sure we had left the doors unlocked. Not 100% but nothing was broken. My son's car got "broken into" and his stuff taken but he had probably left the door unlocked. Interestingly, all three events took place in a 1 year span. (We've lived there 23 years).

Video surveillance and keeping a low profile. I don't leave doors unlocked at any time. I removed my sliding glass door and deck, replaced it with a double window. I don't leave anything outside (mowers, grill, chairs, etc.). Thieves look for easy targets, but a person can't be too cautious these days. I see garage doors left open all day, very inviting to possible thieves.

Back to a conversation on p 1 about identifying locations re: pics posted on BF. Some digital imaging does identify the gps of the pic and I have only been curious enough to know that some do but most don't here. A check of our imaging devices and the properties they show 'detail' in postings might be in order. You may opt to post your location generally, but why let your pics tell more?

I have a Neapolitan Mastiff that hits the door so hard the house shakes when somebody comes by! She actually is a real softy, but you have to get inside to pet her before you would know that.

That is exactly the same strategy my Rottie/King Shepherd uses.

Ha! I am always in the company of my dogs and never, it seems so far, troubled much at all ... camping or at home. Trusting to the nature of my pups ... they may be mastiffs or they may be spaniels ... but their trust is dead on my side and peril is on the other. May I quote my grandmother, "trust your dog". Since I have seen many year myself, take this as an old and tested truism. Trust your dog. If your dog dislikes your best friend ... "just sayin"

Bill Murray said something like "I'm very suspicious of a person who doesn't like dogs, but I trust the dog when it doesn't like a person."

I always trust my dog. Simple kindness returned one hundred fold over is a wonder. If Bill Murray is so credited with such a statement, I am even more of a fan than before.
