homebuilt heat treat oven...

Hi, I tried emailing Laredo7mm to ask about building an electric furnace but the email bounced back. So is there anybody out there who knows about building one?

I'm trying to find out how to compute how long a Kanthal heating element would be needed depending on a given inner chamber size for the furnace to be able to reach 2100 degrees F in say 15-20 minutes?

Thanks in advance.

I bought a small pottery kiln from the local school district for $25 when they were throwing stuff out a couple of years back. It works, and it's a perfect size for knives up to about 18" overall, which is about as big as I'd make anything using steel I couldn't treat with a forge and an oven anyway.

Unfortunately, it runs on 220, which I don't have wired to the shop, the garage, or the basement. I thought of setting it on top of the dryer and running it there, but my wife was opposed for some reason or another.
