First of all, here was the absolute BEST mail call yesterday!! And a GINORMOUS Thank You to Eric Choppaman Choppaman for being my "Iron Mountain" offsite safe storage bunker for the past several months. (story to follow below)

The top box held my Group Buy Scandi Handyman and the other 3 held 60+ fixed blades and sheaths. Since it was just like Christmas, it seemed an appropriate backdrop. :D
Mail Call Boxes.jpg

Second of all, I have done without these knives AND have not carried a fixed blade since August 26 (again, story and reasons to follow below) sooooooo, if anyone has interest in any of these knives, please email me at warrior108@gmail.com and I'll add your name next to them just in case I decide to let any of them go. Do not send a Bladeforums conversation because my Inbox is near full and I just don't have time to go empty stuff right now, thanks.

Onto the story/background ..

I don't want this thread to be negative or a bashing deal so please know I'm not venting or complaining and just tossing out some facts and "fun stuff" we've been going though.
  • Had 2 daughters and got divorced in 2012.
  • It was my first divorce rodeo with kids, a house and things involved so I didn't know what I was doing and just went with the flow, being agreeable. I wanted her and the kids to be comfortable so I offered more than was required for support. After all was agreed on, she asked and got half my 401k. The leverage was that she'd let me keep the house which I kind of needed to work from home. We didn't have much equity in it but nonetheless it would have been a pain to sell, split $$ and start over.
  • Had a 3rd daughter and we got remarried (yes to the same person) in 2016.
  • We had a verbal conversation and agreed on these things: We'd keep things separate for "just in case" so it would be easy and simple to split things up. I'd keep having child support garnished from my check, her budget was hers and mine was mine, she had her house which was our main "family house", I kept my house which was my office/man cave AND anything we owned or bought was going to be separate and individually ours AND if we did get divorced again, she wouldn't go after my house or 401k or belongings again. (she went "gun shopping" in my safe the 1st time and took my favorite HK  and the leverage was "Do you want me to ask for half of them?")
  • Well, so much for that verbal agreement because we filed again this year and things were going fine until she wanted more support $$ and then the leverage and heartburn kicked in again. On the chopping block that a TX Judge would hands-down sign off on was the 401k (50% of the amount built up from married date to divorce date) and any/all community property.
  • One evening in late August there was an especially NOT FUN phone conversation and she stated that she's never seen in my safe but feels that she should be able to go "knife shopping" and since they're community property, she should be able to get half of them. Within minutes of hanging up from that call, I decided to bust out the Escape Pods, stayed up till the wee hours and at 2am was dropping 3 boxes in the USPS kiosk chute.
  • Regarding fixed blades, I kept 2 boxes of knives; 1) About 10-15 knives that I had on a list to sell and 2) A select small group of about 10 knives that I could use for EDC, that I'd hate to part with but would be up for semi-negotiation depending on how divorce negotiations/requirements went. I have a ton of 'spensive folders also but those could be strategically hidden so they stayed.
NOTE: I feel strongly that this was justified since we had an agreement and stuck by it the entire time we were remarried. If things had gone there, I could have maybe gotten in trouble but I felt that it was a risk I could justify in my head. And I needed it to keep my sanity somewhat even-keeled until things were finalized. Also, I'm ok sharing this personal info because things did not get ugly and we did not split community property in any way.

  • And last but not least, the divorce was finalized on 12/6 and I now have an absolute ton of stress behind me. Negotiations and things being held over my head are done with so I can now spend some time on collecting myself and moving forward.

There are a couple reasons I'm taking "dibs" on the knives. First, is that if I can do without these knives for 3+ months and I didn't miss them or don't gush over them during a reunion, then I could maybe part with some. Second, is that just trying to manage this many knives in a collection during times like this or like hurricane Harvey the prior year can be somewhat exhausting. Third, its a lot of $$ to tie up in knives and a responsible voice says that I really ought to get some debt paid off and put more towards the kids' car and college funds, and stuff like that.

Anyway, if you're still here, thanks for listening!! :D

Now for "What's in the box(es)??" ...

Reminder: These are NOT all for sale!! I need probably a week or so to go through them, reunite with them and decide which (if any) I'd be ok selling. :D In the meantime, I'll be taking dibs emails in case. I'm thinking that, while folks are checking out this thread, I may as well save us all some time from posting on the FleaMarket later on.
Warrior108@gmail.com not Bladeforums conversations please.

Congrats Jerry!! Nicely done! I'm still dealing with our divorce and jumping through the legal hoops when all we want is to be not married to each other. So far this year I have come close to dying on three occasions from severe infections in my jaw and in my sinuses thanks to some teeth broken below the gum line that were broken by bats and pipes during fights with gang members in the last four years of my childhood as an orphan on the streets of Dallas back in the 80s. Sometimes I've thought, all things considered, if it weren't for my daughters and grandson I wouldn't bother fighting the infections and just go see what awaits in the next plane of existence.

I've been through two divorces. First one I found out about the running around and had a chance to prepare- on the day of the split, I did not own shit.

What does not kill us, makes us stronger.

Glad you are through to the other side now.

Bill

Thanks Bill, I appreciate it. Any opportunity for planning definitely helps.

Not sure why it popped in my head but your comment made me think that the rest of that saying should be "and what is fun, kills us." lol

Jerry, it was particularly haunting fir me to read your story to this date... it’s been 36 years since my divorce... the material cost was a house that my VA home loan benefits acquired, two Harley Davidsons, including my 59 FLH PanHead... and more... Like a lot of folks here that know you, I know you to be an honest, trustworthy and reliable man. You’ll come out of this hopefully none the worse for the wear, in good time. I’d love to snag a few from you, unlikely though at least for now. All this to say hang in there brother!

Thanks Douglas.

Sorry to hear about everyone else's stuff in the past. Just because it's in the past doesn't make it any less painful - thing always carry forward one way or another.

All:
The other tough part with these things, and my primary concern is the effect it has on the kids. Everyone involved ends up missing everyone else or missing time and moments they would have otherwise shared had everyone been under one roof. I hate to see the kids shuffled back and forth and having to keep track of their stuff or want something and have it be at the other parent's house. The main thing that sucks is hearing them say they miss Mom or that they will miss me or missed me. That said, things were at a status where the kids were tired of us arguing and at that point, you really have to consider what that negativity does for them. My goal going forward is to still work with their mom as best as possible so we keep things consistent for the kids (schedule, routine, education, raising them to be respectful and not little heathens :D)

Fun question for Andy @Fiddleback if he picks it up ...

Given all the Fiddlebacks in this post, I often wonder; Do you remember every knife you make or was there a point where they start to blur after you send them out of the nest?

Thanks, and I'm sorry to hear about how things have been going for you. Hang in there! I'm sure your daughters and grandson would want you around for the long haul. Great motivation there!
