Most of us have family/inter-personal networks that act as a safety net from homelessness. I remember when things were rough for you Dan, you mentioned the kindness of others. Not everyone is so fortunate to have the kindness of others. Yes, there are those who choose that lifestyle, but then again sometimes after knowing the lives of some of these people I wonder how much choice they really had. Also, there seems to be a tendency in this conversation to lump homeless and panhandlers (the typical bum) together. Not everyone sleeping under a bridge is a panhandler. If you have never met someone who was working homeless, then you do not know much about the homeless problem in this country. When waiting lists, besides high rents, become a factor, good hardworking people can find themselves without a roof over their head. Especially if you had no family, or friends. A little while back, as part of a study that we conducted for the Headwaters Foundation, I did lots of surveying of local charities, and activist groups all over Minnesota. I can assure you all, that at least in Minnesota, the resources offered at homeless shelters to better ones life are not being spurned by lazy bums, and that it is a lack of such resources to service all those who were seeking it, that most of these organizations complained about. The soup kitchen and beds, are their bare minimum of services and many of these organizations could barely run it let alone offer career counseling medical services, etc... Also, most of these organizations had such number crunches, that the time period an individual could take advantage of "a free ride" was usually limited to a few days. The reality of living off the charity of harders is much harder than some would think, though perhaps its easier where ya'll live, but then again Minnesota has always ranked as one of the highest in the country in charitable giving and orginazations.

Just in case you’re a Christian, the Bible makes a clear and consistent distinction between the bums described in 1 Timothy 5:8 and the true homeless such as the orphans and widows. It also has a lot to say about freeloaders and bums—and it isn’t nice or flattering. Compassion is an indispensable trait of humanity; misplaced compassion is actually harmful, as I have explained.

A self-confessed pervert, who was invited to a Christian family's home for a meal, tried to sexually molest the man's children. When he was found out, he was told to never darken the door of their home again. Did anyone really seriously think that anything has changed with BF? Hell, the troll alert went up for me when he posted that ridiculous, obviously bullshit story about his dog biting his dick. Jeez......what could be more transparent, considering his history of getting off on shocking people with his lies about the odd/bizarre things that seem to happen to him one after the other. Or maybe he's as cursed as that old woman in Murder She Wrote who has a friend or relative, or acquantance of a friend or relative, murdered, 4 times a month.
