So, I have a large piece of tool steel from a tube rolling mill that I plan on using as an anvil. It is round right now but I plan on grinding a flat face on it. Anybody see a down side to this other than the pain in the butt it will be to grind?

What are you plan to use to grind it? If you are going to use an angle grinder, it very well can end up wavy if your not very careful. This happened to me on a railroad track.

I would recommned trying to find someone with a mill to mill it flat for you.

If its large enough just stand it on end and use the flat end. Less grinding and more mass directly under the hammer blow.

Pyromaniac, Yeah I had planned on using an angle grinder to do the bulk of the work and then have it milled. Trying to save some $.

Grayzer86, That's what I have been doing but it has a hole through it and that kind of limits the width available. I will get some photos in the morning.
