Homemade BK-7 scales

Those look great how did you make them?
Thanks for all the compliments guys. I used the original scales as a template, cut out the shape on a band saw then shaped them with a belt sander. I've rescaled a few knives before but this is the first time I've tried doing the carved/sculpted look.
Everytime I pick the knife up now all I see is the owl...

Here's a couple more pics. One in the hand and one more of the owl...

Yes they are. When I bought the micarta it was advertised as black/green but obviously wasn't. I'd read on another forum that you could use Rit dye to to dye micarta and G10 so I thought I'd give it a go.

A couple of questions for you:

1) What size scales did you get from him? (He has several available and I want to be sure)

2) What grit sandpaper did you use for aggressive shaping of the scales? Or, did you use something else for that?

Thanks for any input. Your scales look incredible!

Thanks for the kind words. The micarta was 1/4 inch thick and the shaping was done with the top of a belt sander with 80 grit belts.

Thanks! I wondered how you created those grooves! Great stuff, Sawyer.

does anyone else see an OWL in these handles ?..................

2nd pic

Ignore if you dont :)

No, I see a leopard! Nice scales, BTW.

How hard is it to make? Can this be done with a Dremel? I have never worked with micarta or G-10.

I guess you could do it with a dremel, might take a bit longer. If you're going to work with G10 or micarta you must wear a mask, the dust from that stuff is bad.
