Planning on making some micarta myself. Anyone have recommendations on what type of bonding agent to use. I would like to use something common that can be found at lowes. Thanks for the help.

I've played with carbon fiber sheets and West System Epoxy and Resin, easy to use stuff being 1 to 1 using their pumps...I'll find out how 1 set of these turns out after they harden

I opened the ACU digital camo this morning at around 11am, cut the excess ends off then got a measurement of 5/16" thick on both ends out of 25 strips 2 1/4" wide x aprox 13" long...once the knife I'm making is done I'll post up how these have turned out or not for the handle scales...good thing is I 4 yards of Army spec ACU digital camo to use up now trying to get it right:D

BlackToe Knives has posted the link in which I used to make these the only difference that I used in making this 1st ACU digital micarta over the carbon fiber that I have made is what I used to sandwich the material with, the carbon fiber I made I used slabs of glass and West System mold release, the glass gives you perfect top and bottom finish, using wood pressed you might have dimples and ripples in the top/bottom sides from the wood but that will be ground off anyways...the wax paper use I did not know about till reading joelbolden post which works great!

Nice work. Really curious how the digi camo will come out once it's been shaped.

Same here, MRPink (btw Reservoir Dogs is a great flick, i presume that's where the nick comes from). "Who's a tough guy? That's right, you're a tough guy!"

I didn't want Mr. Pink, but you know how that goes, haha.

I think once the handles have been shaped, you'll lose the digital/square patterns and get a blend of ACU colors. It's either going to turn out really good or really bad, I think. Still cool either way though.

i have been thrown around the same idea without the camo but with the material that those cheap ass camping chairs are made of. im glad you posted this

I've been experimenting lately with homemade micarta. I've just used fiberglass resin from Home Depot and fabric from walmart in whatever color I want. It's a fun project.

I actually made some micarta from some canvas duck cloth and glued the layers up with titebond 3 wood glue. It worked alright.

I'm new to this forum thing-but I joined because I've been looking into ways to make my own tomahawk handles for some cold steel hawks out of something tougher than wood. Micarta seems to be something that might fit that criteria. Before I go investing money and time into this off really like to know if this is the case. Anyone have the answer to this? Tips or suggestions?

I made some yellow jute burlap last night actually. Use lots of wax paper, don't over clamp and try not to use too much resin but try to mix as much as you'll need. Better to toss a little than try to mix more while you're in the middle of the project.

Do a search on the topic, both here and on YouTube. Pulling up old threads is frowned upon.

Welcome aboard!

Thank you Strigamont. This is the first forum I've ever joined-I wasn't aware that getting on an older thread was bad etiquette. My apologies. The info I'd much appreciated!

Guys, this is a five year old thread. Start a new one if you still want to discuss making MYcarta ( Micarta is a trademarked phenolic process which you can't make at home)

Sturmvogel,

Always look at the dates from the first and last posts in any thread you find in a search. If it is an older thread, don't re-open it...just start a new thread with your question. You can link the old thread for reference in your post.

Yes its called necroposting, and in some message boards it is considered funny, especially if it shows what a noob a current high standing member was back in the day

But here at bladeforums its likely to get you beoch slapped back to the stone age if you do it more then once ;0)
