Homemade Sheaths for Barkies

Hey Stretch, seems you really like the Mini-Skinner. I have been thinking of a smaller Barkie like the Canadians or scalpel lately, care to elaborate on the Mini Skinner, how is it working for you? It looks great in your pics.

Here's what I know (only 'cause I claim to know it) :D

- the mini-Skinner is larger than the mini (or Mikro) Canadians and fits my hand better;
- it's got that classic bow-back skinner design that I like;
- I like the belly and curve ratio on it (does that make sense? probably not)
- I've kilt two ducks with it and it performed uhm.....well, like a knife I suppose :)
- I've cut boxes, tape, string, paracord, ANY low hanging branches that I pass by, and several other things I suppose, and it works....well, again, like a knife should I suppose.

- the mini-Canadian is my daughter's;
- the size and shape of the blade makes it (for me) very easy to sharpen and achieve a razor (literally) edge;
- it's the sharpest knife in our home, bar none;
- it's a little small for my hand, even though I've adjusted to smaller knives, most generally my little finger hangs off the end and curls around the lanyard;
- I want one that I can call my own! ((( :D ))) (probably a grn canvas, bamboo, red linen, or similar lower-priced scale)

- the scalpel is no more than a Mikro-Canadian (or Mikro II, can;t remember which)
- it's the same as buying a Canadian..... 6 one way, 7 the other.

With all that said, the mini and Mikro-Candians are on my wishlist, but so is a third mini-Skinner!

IUKE12,
I forgot to ask earlier: What dye did you use on the Frost sheath? And, did you wait for the leather to dry completely or maybe dye when still slightly damp? Did you buff or otherwise manipulate the leather before dying?

I like that color and tone, and I'd like to try to duplicate it so I'm trying to learn your dying process.

Wow, beautiful sheaths! The Highland was my first BRKT, and I EDC-it a lot, in a kydex sheath--but I like that leather one!

I also EDC a Mini-Skinner, and it has that Impala Horn handle.

Your sheaths are tempting!:thumbup:

Stretch, thanks for the barkie info, it helps. I think I will end up with a Mini C, love the A2 steel:D I used Fiebing's dark brown oil dye. Leather was completely dry and I did not manipulate, massage or otherwise molest the leather before dying. I applied the dye using a cotton ball, get it good a saturated and then wipe it dry with a clean cotton ball. That's it. After the dye is dry to the touch I warm the leather up with a heat gun or hair dryer if no gun, and rub in Sno-Seal. Done

Here are a couple of photos or three of my homemade sheath for my Highland Special. The leather is 6-7oz which I've found is more than stiff and strong enough for this size knife. I want to make them better, so your comments and constructive criticisms are welcome!

ALSO, if anyone can tell me how to upload thumbnails (instead of full-size images) from Photobucket, I'd appreciate it. :D
Perhaps, this could help you: http://www.trentinistefano.it/coltelli-aprile-maggio-007.pdf With my best regards, Stefano :)
